Town After Irish Keeper?
Town After Irish Keeper?
Wednesday, 5th Aug 2009 21:23

Town are targeting Bohemians goalkeeper Brian Murphy, according to sources in Ireland. The Dublin side are one of a number of League of Ireland clubs currently in financial problems and are looking to reduce their wage bill.

Waterford-born Murphy, 26, started his career in England with Manchester City, where he spent time on loan at Oldham and Peterborough. While at London Road, he made his first senior appearance in his only game for the Posh.

In 2003, after three years at Eastlands, Murphy moved on to Swansea, where he made 18 appearances before returning to Ireland in 2007.

Capped by the Republic of Ireland at U19, U20 and U21 levels, the 6ft 1in tall keeper has been tipped for senior international football. In 2008 he was named the FAI League of Ireland Player of the Year.

While Town already have two goalkeepers, the Blues may be keen to send Shane Supple out on loan to gain first team experience, in which case cover would be required.

Meanwhile, former Town striker Darren Bent has completed his £10 million move to Sunderland, signing a four-year contract.

Elsewhere, the Blues have been linked with a renewed move for ex-loanee Giovani Dos Santos. The Mexican, who was recently named the Most Valuable Player at the CONCACAF Gold Cup as his nation won the tournament, looks set to leave Spurs this summer with Espanyol, Galatasaray, Atlético Madrid, Manchester City, Paris St Germain and Inter Milan amongst the sides mentioned in connection with him this summer.

Is this where the renewed interest in Murphy (D) story came from?

Fair enough, would be good for Supple to get more experience out on loan...

Considering that Supple has only signed a 1 year contract I don't see where it benefits Ipswich to send him out on a season's loan. He signed the contract to push Wrighty for the Number 1 shirt this season; why then pay a years salary for him to play elsewhere and then have him walk away for nothing at the end of this season?

Would love dos santos back BUT I really can't see it - sadly!

Hate to be pedantic, but what was he doing at Eastlands before 2003? Running laps at the Commonwealth Games while all his mates were at Maine Road?

Why would we want another keeper, really? We already have the best in the Championship (R Wright).
As someone's already pointed out, Supple is on a one-year contract, so why send him out on loan?
ITFC is not here to bail out skint Irish football clubs, and I'm sure Evans/Keane dont see us that way either!

I think the Irish press are going to link EVERY available Irish player (especially players at the financially troubled (skint) clubs) with Ipswich, especially as Keane is such a highly-regarded figure there. I wouldn't read to much into it.

I meant highly-regarded figure in IRELAND, lol. A bit ambiguous my comment, although I would hope he is highly-regarded here too!!

Brian Murphy was the name of the guy who played George in "George and Mildred". Surely he would be too old now! Seriously though I can't see the need for another keeper. I could'nt see the need for another midfeilder either.

We'll have more keepers then we have strikers if this was to happen!

another keeper is not needed. another irish player is not wanted! i was all up for irish talent coming to portman road, but enough is enough and i would much rather see young local english talent trying to force their way in. traditionally we have one of the best youth systems in the country, but the talent we have needs a chance to shine!

Brian Murphy is the best goalkeeper to play in the League of Ireland for over 40 years. He is top class. His performance against Salsburg in the European Champions League qualifyer recently won rave reviews all over Europe. Roy Keane would by buying a gem if he signs him. He will play for Ireland very shortly.
