Town Linked With Swindon Striker
Town Linked With Swindon Striker
Wednesday, 30th Dec 2009 15:51

Town, Nottingham Forest and Derby are all being linked with a January move for Swindon Town striker Charlie Austin. The 20-year-old has netted seven goals in his first seven senior starts for the Robins after joining them from non-league in October.

Austin was with Reading’s youth set-up as a schoolboy but dropped out of the professional game, playing with Thatcham Town and hometown side Hungerford Town before joining Wessex League Premier Division club Poole Town last season.

The 6ft 2in tall striker scored a hugely impressive 46 goals in 46 starts and two sub appearances as the Dolphins won their league by 17 points and also picked up the Dorset Senior Cup.

In the summer, Austin spent time training with Bournemouth but was unable to join the League Two side due to their transfer embargo. Instead, he signed for Swindon until the end of the season for an undisclosed fee in early October, having already netted 18 goals in 11 appearances for Poole, who remained in the same division despite winning last season’s championship.

After four games as a sub, Austin, who previously worked in the building trade, has netted in all but one of his seven starts for Swindon, scoring twice in the 3-2 victory over Leyton Orient earlier this month.

Good record, but our last 'prolific' scorer from Swindon turned out to be a poor signing. Not proven at Championship level, so doubt Roy would take a chance. With Stead out for a month - and the other strikers struggling for goals, we need a new striker and fast.

sam parkin comes to mind but you have to take a gamble from time to time. still think steadys ban will help priskin in becoming our top striker

Yes I have seen him play and he is the same mould as Sam Parkin. He will need the supply to score and the few times I saw Sam Parkin play he did not get the supply from other areas to score.

He was never the same after his injury.

As for Charlie, it will take alot to take him away from Swindon.
1 Swindon is his boyhood team and he is still living a dream.
2 Swindon do not need to sale they are finances are good
3 He has it in his contract that Swindon can extend his contract at the end of the season if they wish to do so, which they probably will.

There is a Crawley Town Striker who scored a hattrick in the 1st six minutes away from home on Monday, that's what I call prolific!

My dad is an avid Poole Town supporter and i was down there at the weekend and he reckoned that we could do a lot worse than looking at Charlie Austin. He is mustard apparently. It's quite ironic that a couple of days later he is linked with us.

Worth a 300k punt or a straight swap for Lisbie!

According to The Times, Steve Bruce has a list of about 5-6 with irish sounding names to get rid of - be afraid, very afraid!

I saw Charlie Austin play against Brighton just over a week ago and have seen all of his 7 goals on the net. I was very impressed with him. He is a natural goalscorer with excellent awareness and anticipation for a chance. He has the ability to hold the ball up and bring others into play. He also works hard and seems anxious to make up for lost time.

I agree with Haynesy (another chap who's second favoutite team is in Wilshire?) he is unlikely to be prised away from Swindon just yet whatever the offer.

I made the point recently that certain players are such natural goalscorers that they can make the transition easily to a higher level. If Wessex league to Div 1 is a no trouble then stepping up to Championship with better players supporting shouldn't be a problem. Jordan Rhodes I'm sure would have been top scorer at Ipswich by now if given the chance. He too can score at any level I believe - below Premier anyway. (Sorry for mentioning him again!)

More chance if going for Barnard of Southend.

Finidi,

I hope your guarantee is the same as an Argos receipt that's been through the wash - Leon Best is one of the worst strikers about, he might be having an OK season but long term? nope!

Not sure a 20 year old hopeful is what we need either - we have the 16 year old potential of Connor, do we need another hopeful?

Think/hope any striker signed will be a seasoned pro - proven at Championship line leader/Premiership support striker level (like Marlon King but actually able to play football!).

We're creating chances, we need somebody guaranteed to convert them...

Funnily enough was talking about this lad just the other day after his name kept getting mentioned on Football league show.

Only 20, but wouldn't cost a bomb, the goals he's scored look like someone with bags of confidence and enjoying his football.

Defo worth a punt.

I'd like to second the Kevin Phillips call.

Experienced striker, not used by Brum, showed last season he still has what it takes at this level.

Simeon Jackson is another that I think could be a good signing.

Beckford looks unlikely with Newcastle showing interest, a team with good promotion hopes.

And please not Leon Best, my mates a Cov Fan, ball greedy player and pretty lazy........if anyone from Coventry City get Clinton Morrison, great goal scoring record.

Look at the impact David Johnson had. He had no track record, for scoring goals in the Championship, other than having a decent record in league 2 but Burley took a punt and he turned out to be a valued addition to the team at the time.

I personally think we missed a trick in the summer, Ricky Lambert was the one we should have spent the money on. Consistently proved that he is a goal scorer which has continued this season. I know some will argue he hasn't proved it in a league above but neither had Marcus Stewart at Huddersfield!
