Keane Hits Out at Mariner
Keane Hits Out at Mariner
Friday, 26th Mar 2010 08:51

Roy Keane has launched a surprising attack on Town legend Paul Mariner for failing to join him for a drink after Tuesday’s 2-0 defeat to Plymouth. Keane always makes a point of meeting up with opposition managers after matches and has previously spoken out against bosses who haven’t bothered with the convention.

The Blues boss, who had lauded Mariner’s achievements with Town before the game, said: “I’ve no problem with Paul coming back here, but after the game Paul didn’t have the decency to come down for a drink with us, to see my staff, to see the opposition manager. He was too busy up here seeing all his mates.

“You remember these things in football. It’s not bad blood because I couldn’t have spoken highly enough about Paul before the game, but have the decency to come down for a drink after the game.”

Keane said he asked the former England striker to join him for a second time but he was with Town’s former chairman: “He found his way up here with Mr Sheepshanks and all them when I invited him for a drink again.”

The Town manager says he and his management team always make a point of meeting with their opposite numbers after games: “It's not going to change the result, I appreciate that and it's not bad blood, far from it.

“It gets me because when we go to away games I make sure that all my staff go in for a drink, win, lose or draw. That's representing your club, particularly when you're asked.”

it's just good manners and Roy did have the decency to let Paul out of the tunnel to have his ovation before he walked out. He should have had the manners to pop down for a quickie with Roy and his team as invited.

Seriously though it's a bit off not to accept the invitation, but did Keane really need to go public with it?

Keep your mouth shut Keane - concentrate on trying to win games - you're an embarrassment

Shut it Keane, you talk too much rubbish to the press, perhaps PM was embarrassed at what you've done to his once great club, or perhaps like me he's fussy about who he drinks with?

it's actually not not a bad thing to do, after all, keane praised Mariner before the game, allowed him his standing ovation without trying to get involved, and all Mariner could do was Arrogantly decline.

I understand Roy's feelings, but he really shouldn't be saying this kind of thing to the press. Keane gets a lot of stick for a reason: he doesn't know when to keep his mouth shut and the press like to poke him because they know they can get a reaction. Will he ever learn?

Benitez does it, Big Sam does it, Wenger does it, Maurinho does it, all the big bosses do it!

i must admit its hardly the most important thing keane should be worrying about.

I expect Keane is frustrated that our 2 worst home results of the season (Newcastle / Plymouth) have coincided with the distracton of returning former heroes. Agree though, some things are best not aired in public.

And its not something he is worrying about - the three news spreads on this site are from 1 press conference, he hasn't called one to tell the world about Mariner, hes talking abuot everything, abut the booing, about the meeting, about the support etc etc..

Get a grip people

I am afraid by now you should all know that RK does speak his mind, nothing wrong with that at all, too many Politicions that do not both in Politics and Sport, and because he does that he is hung for it , I am not surprised at Paul Mariners response, and although he is a legend I am a bit upset he did not reciprocate the good welcome Keane & his staff gave him. RK has stated no bad blood he just also states that he was not happy with the situation, good, it happens every day in the real business world.

Too many town fans live in the past on past glories.......

So Mariner didnt want to go for drinkypoos with Keano, his team had just beaten us ,he probably knew Keano would dodge his round, and he would probably have got a Knee in b''locks and a glasgee kiss when he went for a slash .GET A GRIP kEANE , There are far more important matters to be thinking about, if its a piss up ya be wanting its Glasgow for you laddie !

I agree that Mariner was a bit out of order, after all he's seen his mates at the club a few times in the past for the many get-togethers they have so he should have given Keane the time, especially if he asked twice.

However, I don't like the way that Keane holds grudges - we all know that he never lets them go once he has them (Haaland and Ireland 2002 being proof) and he should certainly keep this kind of thing to himself.

But I guess if you hire an outspoken person as manager then you have to accept this kind of thing.

Harwich_Blue - you have hit the nail on the head mate, too many fans are still living in the 1970's and 1980's, i have nothing against the teams history and what weve achieved but some of the fans who moan that the club isnt the same as it was in the 80's need to let go

A scene from the Apprentice

Keane could have gone up to the Directors Box & met Mariner for a drink. . . but perhaps after losing 2 - 0 at home to a legend & relegation rival he was avoiding the boardroom. Best not to bump into Marcus on a night like that hey? Keano . . . . You're fired!!

I did a facepalm reading this. Guys just shake hands, it's probably down to the grey area of protocol. Mariner's been away from England for years, he probably doesn't know the protocol of every manager in the league whether they're very strict or casual in post-match get-togethers. He was probably not himself coming back to Portman Road after years, everybody wasnted a piece of him. But there should have been some backroom staff advising him. And Roy, please don't keep looking for reasons to fall out with fellow managers, I'm sure it was a one-off situation.

keane you're an embaressment! Shut your mouth and how about sorting out the way your team is playing and not worrying if the opposition manager will join you for a pint of guinness after the game. TW*T.

No one knows the true circumstances. But even if PM was disrespectful towards RK, why blurt it out? There's no such thing as quiet dignity when it comes to RK.

By the way, can anyone else recall RK slanging Jim Magilton and ITFC as well when he was Sunderland manager over a transfer or loan that didn't go ahead? What an embarrassment.

Perhaps Mariner was busy trying to find his glasses? Those that listen to Radio Suffolk post match will know what I'm on about...
