Stoke Back in Hunt for Walters
Stoke Back in Hunt for Walters
Tuesday, 4th May 2010 14:43

Stoke City are again reported to be weighing up a move for Town skipper Jon Walters. The Potters were strongly linked with the 26-year-old in August 2008 but despite making an enquiry and reports claiming multiple bids, no offer was ever made.

Peter Reid, Stoke’s assistant manager, was at Portman Road on Sunday to watch the Republic of Ireland B international in action, having been at St James' Park for the Newcastle match the previous week, with a £4 million bid said to be in the offing.

Walters, who is contracted to the Blues until 2012, became Town’s skipper earlier in the season with manager Roy Keane a big fan.

Last week Keane hinted that the club might have received some interest in the former Bolton and Blackburn trainee: “I think Jon Walters has been amazing this year, his captaincy has been excellent and he’s been a joy to work with - his leadership skills in the dressing room when we were under the cosh and last weekend, aside from his goal, he was outstanding.

“There will be plenty of clubs — there are already — who would be keen to take Jon Walters.

”I’m not going to kid myself that I’ll just be bringing players in, I’m going to have hard work keeping some of our players.”

Town signed Walters for £100,000 plus extras which would ultimately take the deal to £200,000 from Chester City in January 2007. Chester would have been entitled to 20% of any sell-on had the club not gone out of business earlier in the season.

Lol - I could almost predict the first couple of messages on here about this story.

Keane says that he has been invaluable this season, Stoke, a Premiership club, come in for him and yet still the keyboard warriors berate him.

I honestly think a straw poll amongst these idiots would show that most would rather keep David Wright, an average Championship RB that keep our club captian

We've gotta keep hold of our key players!!

But, £4Mill..... Keane may HAVE to accept!!

Yorkshire - Do you think JW is THAT good then?

And what you on about comparing DW to JW?!?!?!?! DW was ok, but not really comparable with JW. I'd take £4m for ANY of our team, other than CW.

Why do all our players surnames begin with W?

What a boon. The most one sided, and overrated player. Don't get me wrong, he's incredibly hard working, but very limited and his response to us going behind is to just go chasing the ball rather than keeping our shape, which would serve us better. (As per POSH away).

On the other hand, if Martin's worth £2mil and Priskin £1.7, then as our captain he's worth more than £4mil. Lol.

Yorkshire,
I resent your comment about me being an idiot because I have an opinion about the 4 million valuation Stoke are willing to pay for Walters. Walters is not the talisman of our team; we would cope without him, and probably get a couple of decent players for that price. It seems to me that we need a striker and a right-back, more than we need a right midfielder. No?

£4m?? I'll do the 1st stint to peterborough services if someone else fancies the next leg up to stoke

Let him go, and Wickham for 5 million. Because Roy Keane's got his eyes on the ex-Sunderland keeper and that's what we really need, not strikers!

They'll never pay £4m for him. Tabloid talk.

but how much? based on Priskin; £3m is good, £1m is bad

I'd take £4m,i'd even take 2 to be honest..Walters was brilliant the first year he arrived, especially when we ripped Bristol City apart 6-0 (remember that Jim-outers?)...not been great over the last 2 seasons, not sure why..doesn't bomb down the right wing anymore..seems to have stagnated so best to move him on - so long as the money is spent "wisely" which I doubt it will at the moment.

Yorkshire,
I resent your comment about me being an idiot - wasn't really aimed at you in particular just at the people who have berated JW all season saying how crap he was

Yorkshire - Do you think JW is THAT good then? - no but I do think that he is a better player than most on here seem to think he is and I would judge Keane's and Pulis's opionions higher than most

And what you on about comparing DW to JW?!?!?!?! DW was ok, but not really comparable with JW. I'd take £4m for ANY of our team, other than CW. - my point was that everyone seems to be whining about DW leaving yet I expect that some at least would be happy to see Walter go. However I do agree that £4M is enough to buy any of our players (CW excluded) but fear it is just tabloid talk

I would take £4m straight away and give Crystal palace £2m for ambrose and £1million for Neill Dann's we might be able to get them for less or they might cost more but not much more i wouldn't have thought Dans for example cost palace £500,000 and only has a year left i think unless he has signed an extension, i wouldn't consider selling Wickham for £5mill+ then if i got £4mill for Walters

Walters is a great captain and can be exceptionally good in midfield under certain circumstances and is capable of getting a fair amount of goals as well as working hard.

As a hard worker he would fit rite in at at a club like stoke who rely on battling hard and chasing every ball whilst have strong players in the box for set pieces to do what they do in the premier league.

For us i want to see lighter faster wider trickier wingers that make the space in the middle for CM to be more creative and allow Leadbitter or Norris to come forward more Because that is the real problem not the actual players playing in the middle

Could well be some truth in the story, but im not too sure about the amount...but given the choice between accepting a £4million bid for Walters or a £5million bid for Wickham in order to free up some tranfer funds, then id let Walters go any day of the week.

Although none of us know what he does behind the scenes, and it appears he does a lot given Keanes comments, and there is no doubting his effort levels, a player of his ability can be replaced and Id much rather have a skillful, pacey winger with a decent cross down our right wing anyway.

so the summer of speculation starts, to be honest i like Walters commitment but he hasnt been the same player for the last 2 seasons and if this turns out to be true then i think we've got to take the money
