Wright Set for West Ham Return
Wright Set for West Ham Return
Monday, 14th Jun 2010 11:43

Keeper Richard Wright could be set for a return to former club West Ham, having been released by the Blues at the end of the season. The former England keeper is in talks with the Hammers regarding a move back to Upton Park.

If terms are agreed, Wright is likely to reprise the role of regular sub keeper with the Londoners, a position he occupied during the 2007/08 season, aside from three Carling Cup appearances, despite speculation regarding Robert Green's West Ham future.

The 32-year-old moved back to Portman Road in the summer of 2008, but was considered surplus to requirements by Roy Keane with his Town deal up at the end of 2009/10. League One Charlton are also understood to be interested in the ex-England man.

Elsewhere, ex-Town defender Chris Swailes has joined Blue Square North side Blyth Spartans as player/assistant manager. The 40-year-old left Blue Square Premier club Gateshead at the end of 2009/10.

Meanwhile, former Blue John Peddelty is recovering in Addenbrooke's Hospital after collapsing while out on a golf course last week.

The 55-year-old central defender made 50 appearances for the Blues between 1973 and 1976, scoring seven goals, before moving on to Plymouth Argyle as part of the deal which saw Paul Mariner join Town.

Wrighty has the danger of gaining more injuries at Upton Park. A splinter in the arse could keep him out for weeks!

Shows his ambition IF this is true and Keane was right to release him.

Some more lucrative bench warming for Wrighty. You can't blame the lad I'd do it for £10K a week.

Its actually not so certain he'd be on the bench, there is a feeling west ham will let green go for the right price...although that price might have plumetted since saturday evening. Even if hes second choice one injury gives you the chance to play premiership football and he did say he still felt he could play top flight, if he went to a championship side that may sentance him to spend the rest of his career outside the premiership

Wrighty annoys me... I guess he's what I'd call 'wasted talent'. He was probably the best 'keeper I ever saw in a town shirt, destined to play no. 1 for England, but the silly move to Arsenal and his obvious contentment to play second fiddle at various clubs rather than a regular number 1 kinda sums it up. I was really excited when he came back to Town, I thought finally he's seen the light and wants to become a top goalie again, but I guess he came back a very different Richard Wright. Will wish him luck for the future, but very much doubt he'll be making any major headlines. I can't even see the guy going into coaching which is such a shame as I don't think his heart is in the game... as I started the comment - wasted talent.

I'm sorry but if he is a real sportsman he should want to play each game.

If that means finding your natural level is below what you wish for then so be it. Accept it.

All of us have to accept our level in sport so why does RW think he has the divine right to play at a level he clearly isn't suited for.

His behaviour smacks of money grabbing. Not for me.

He moved to arsenal when seaman was deemed to be a season away from the end, i.e was happy to play second fiddle for a year for a chance to be first choice for one of the worlds biggest clubs....I doubt he moved to everton on anything other than the basis he'd be able to fight for first choice status. He would have come to us before but magilton didn't have the cash to sign him and so he took the west ham offer....and as I say, the feeling is that west hams owners are keen to let green go if they can get good money for him, so he may well be talking about being the no1, not a bench warmer

To be fair, he was also very unlucky with injuries at the wrong time, especially when he moved to Everton. He would have been their no. 1 had he not injured his back, which is when they signed Martyn whose form kept him out of the team once he'd recovered. I really hope that, wherever he ends up, he can belatedly fulfill the potential we saw in his first spell at the club, but I fear it's been too long.

Agree with sirben... and would also add that he did the dirty on us. He and his money grabbing agent made sure Arsenal knew exactly what the clause was in his contract (remember he had just signed a new contract with us) so that Arsenal could buy him at a fee that was below his valuation at that time. I still maintain that the timing and manner of his departure was the turning point in our fortunes, and signalled that we had peaked and would not be able to retain or attract star players, even after finishing 5th. For that, I will never forgive him.

If he goes to WH he'll get 1st team action fairly soon as i predict that someone will break the 6 fingers on each of the inbred scum Green's hands when he gets back from SA. What a total bellend!

I agree with you too BROGAN... He was the first brick taken out of the wall as it began to crumble and fall apart (how scary to think that was about 10-years ago now!!! did we replace him with Serini or was that later?). To me, Town have lacked a quality keeper for too long and its one of our problems. Defences don't like a kid in goal and all of the great teams have generally had a real figure head between the sticks - something we have missed out on in recent years. I know we all talk about money etc. but the fact he wasn't even seen by RK as worth keeping on as a role model/coaching role for the guys coming through is another testiment to his lack of heart for the game. A real shame I think... how many posts above contain the words 'Could have', 'potential', 'potentially' - Richard Wright, could have potentially been a great for club and country. :-)

I think RW's story is one taht lots of talented young players should learn from (Connor I hope you read this). Not only does such a player get lots of first team action, they become the fans' hero. We used to chant "England's no.1" long and loud well before he ever played for country, but his confidence grew and grew, and there was a terrific sense of the team, player and fans all benefitting together. When he left for Arsenal and was just beginning to get picked for country, he had a couple of nightmares (bringing down strikers to concede penalty) and the Arsenal fans didn't give a monkey's about him. His confidence disappeared and IMHO he never recovered.

Yer i cant disagree with you Brogansconk, but i recon we need a better keeper than wat we got!!

MonkeyBlue I doubt he will ever get a game for West Ham, be realistic he couldn't even get a game for us! West Ham will only play him if they want to be relegated next season. If they get rid of Green they will buy another keeper making Wright number 2 and if they have a good youngster coming through the ranks he could even be number 3. Unfortunatly Wright doesn't like football as much as he likes money, glad we are getting rid he is simply not good enough.

Wright wouldnt of droped that easy ball on sat so he be number 1 for west ham :L

Monkey_Blue added 13:31 - Jun 14
Not convinced by Murphy at all and the fact that keane has said he wants another strong keeper suggests he wont be no1 next season...Keane has lots of faults, one of which is he signs players then discards them very quickly..but i think he might be right to feel murphy isn't really good enough

I don't really see people's opposition to Wrighty going to a club for a good contract. How many people on here would take a wage increase, to have less responsibility? I certainly would! Just because its football, why is it different. He's a jobbing goalkeeper nearing the end of his career, not some charity worker.

SouperJim added 13:42 - Jun 14
I agree with much of the above analysis of Wright, but I'm still not entirely sure why we haven't kept him and why he isn't our number 1. It has been suggested wages might be an issue and there is a need to make the books balance to bring other players in, but this seems at odds with our financial clout of late. I still think Wrighty is better than the other keepers we have at the club and the idea that West Ham would be willing to have him between the sticks for them is further evidence as far as I can see.

So Kelvin Davis and Neil Alexander were no good. Don't think so.

Agreed all the others, including current lot, are crap.
