Arsenal Linked With Wickham Move
Arsenal Linked With Wickham Move
Thursday, 15th Jul 2010 12:23

Arsenal are reported to be ready to fight north London rivals Spurs for Town striker Connor Wickham’s signature. Tottenham are understood to have made bids of £5 million and £8 million for the England U17 international this summer.

News of Arsenal’s interest in Wickham, who signed a two-year deal with the Blues earlier in the year, comes as little surprise with the Gunners having been amongst a host of Premier League clubs keeping an eye on the 17-year-old’s progress since his time as an academy schoolboy.

Town have repeatedly said that they want to hold on to their prize asset, while the player himself has said he is happy at Portman Road.

Come back in a year or so lads. You'll do Connor no favours by burying him under your foreign imports.

A typical summer press story. No facts. Half truths. Lazy speculation.

Due to not being able to get rid of the infamous 8 I can see us sacrificing Connor Wickham. Be a real shame but you can see it happening!!

Won't happen. Our season depends on his performances and I think Connor and Clegg made it clear enough that they're both not interested in a transfer.

How many years would it take for Connor to get a start in a league match at Arsenal?

Too long. Connor needs another 3 or 4 seasons at town to improve his skills and perfect his goal scoring abilities. He is hopefully the striker we have been waiting for to come off the academy conveyor belt and fire us to the prem... just hope the team can create the chances for him which im sure with confidence they will!

This would be bad for Connor and his progress, just look at R.Wright and how he was going to be the next big thing. And he went to the Gunners aswell.

10 million quid? No way.

40 million, at least. And once the rules about English lads in English teams come in, you could safely double that. Football finance theses days is more about how deep you can dig rather than how reasonable it is.

Too big a club for Connor at the moment... but I don't think it will be 3 or 4 seasons until he's ready for that size of club... 2 at the most if he lives up to his promise... which is why I think he's only on a 2 year deal... If everything goes to plan and he does the business this coming season, we will end up being forced to sell him next summer, or let his contract run out. then we wouldn't get anywhere near the amounts quoted... let's pray he does do well, but then come mid April signs a contract extension... that way, we either get his true value, or keep him.
I also agree with robdaful... it was the wrong move for R Wright and pretty much ruined his career.

Firstly, I would not want to see him leave the club, frankly with out Connor we have little to no striking power.

HOWEVER..........If (and thats a big if) the reports of £8mill are true, can we afford to turn this down? By this I mean even with Connor in the team we will struggle to get promoted (unless we can buy some more players, and ship the rubbish out). So that means A) Connor with have a cracking season and given that at the end of next season he will only have 1yr on his contract could go for less? (I would hope not but....) B) Connor for whatever reason have an average/bad season and we have missed out on £8mill.

Now as I have stated I don't want to see Connor go because without him we are dead in the water, however I think a lot of people on here are posting with their heart and not their head. £8mill is a good offer, my heart just hopes we don't accept it.

If a realistic bid comes in then it would make sense to cash in and get him back on a season long loan as I think if he doesn't go now he will probably be going at the end of the forthcoming season anyway. We will only be able to hold on to him for so long. And with Town's debt just getting bigger & bigger and seemingly no movement of the 8 transfer listed players (who wouldn't bring in close to £8m combined) a large bid will be impossible to turn down.

I really hope the guy who suggested he is worth £40M is joking. That is more than David Villa went for, and he is the best striker in the world.

If we get £10M, accept. That could get us Chopra plus £6M more to spend.

i would take 5 million for him easy, he isnt proven at championship level really so 5 million would be a decnt offer, bite someones hands off for 8 million.

There will always be speculation about any young promising player at a club like ours... We've just got to try and make sure that he is happy and that he remains happy at Town - and while we're there we should tell the big boys to FCUK OFF!

Joeipy01 - 5mill? Don't you remember us selling Bent for 3 mill and then Charlton selling him for 16 mill after a season or two? We must hold onto him for at least a season.

Sell him and then buy Dele Adebola

trueblue added 13:21 - Jul 15
This is all talk, we can't afford to sell him yet, he still needs sharpening up, and ITFC is the perfect place for him to hone his skill, but if if right offer comes along for Mr Evans, who knows? him and pablo would make a good pairing shame Mr Keane can't see it

The differance was that Charlton sold Bent after he proved himself in Prem, we did have a sell on clause. My worry is that all the speculation and fans saying things like " our season depends on him!!" will heap too much pressure on the young man.

If there is any truth to the interest then sell to whoever for 8m (if thats the price), but make sure the contract says we get him back straight away on loan, and if possible for two seasons. Hes not going to get first team footie at either club so it might be something they would agree too?. Otherwise keep him. Just my two penneth worth.

Hopefully this is just paper talk. Staying put for at least a season is the best for everyone, Connor and Town, oh, except Jonathon Barnett. Hopefully Connor has his head screwed on and decides to play for us this year before deciding. In terms of valuation, we would be crazy to consider anything less than £10M, this lad is prob going to be the England centre forward for years to come and could be worth the sort of money some have mentioned in a year or two.
