Kennedy Town Target
Kennedy Town Target

Welsh sources are reporting that Town have made a renewed move to sign Cardiff City left-back Mark Kennedy. The Blues previously targeted the former Republic of Ireland international back in March and prior to that in January.

According to the claims, Town will pay £75,000 for the 34-year-old, who only recently agreed a new one-year deal with the cash-strapped Bluebirds.

Earlier today, boss Roy Keane revealed that he is close to adding three players to his squad.

Kennedy is a player well-known to Keane, the two having played together for the Republic of Ireland, for whom the Dubliner won 34 caps, scoring four goals.

The 5ft 11in tall left-back or winger played youth football at Home Farm where the likes Owen Garvan, Shane Supple and Alan Lee also spent time as youngsters and where Garvan’s father is a coach.

Kennedy’s first English club was Millwall, who he joined in 1992, moving on to Liverpool in 1995 for £1.5 million. After three years at Anfield, during which time he went on loan at QPR, Kennedy signed for Wimbledon for £1.75 million.

A year later he made a switch to Manchester City for £1 million, then after two years at Maine Road Kennedy moved on to Wolves for £2 million.

In 2006 after five years at Molineux, Kennedy joined Crystal Palace on a free transfer, moving on to Cardiff in the summer of 2008, again on a free.

Since his switch to Wales, Kennedy has made 69 starts and seven sub appearances but without scoring.

A left-back is very much on Keane’s summer wish-list with Shane O’Connor the only left-footed full-back currently at the club.

Not sure about this one, I would be happier with Finnan, as he can play left and right back.

Seems a good deal to me. Experienced player hopefully on a 1 year contract who takes a very good set piece and with o'connor as cover learning off him.

A sensible if not exciting transfer!

Free transfer at the age of 30, free transfer at the age of 32, yet we would have to pay a transfer fee for him at the age of 34?! Okay, so only £75K but why do Ipswich always seem to come out on the wrong side of transfer deals?

In principle I am not against signing a left-back, but I can't get excited about someone of Kennedy's age and I hope we have some higher calibre signings about to join this club else it will be a long season.

Looks like Chopra is gunna stay at cardiff, as he said it on sky sports today. However what a player says and does is a different thing altogether i still think we should put a bid in for him!

Kennedy gd player for 34, nothing to get up in the air bout, but its a possible signing which when we make 1 can only be a good thing as others should follow! :D

Agree Mark, we do always seem to get the "bum end" of any deal!! I guess we do need a bit of experience, but as you say, def going to struggle to excited about this signing....

Yep, would be a decent signing, but agree not for the long term.

£75k... Sign him - a left sided player - can play at both LB and LW... cover fro Luca and O'Connor for peanuts. Take a wider view boys - we need good cover in all areas. Ok so he's 34 - big deal - the future is nextt season not the year after.

Finnan - yes, Fulop - yes, Chopra - yes, Kennedy - yes. Let's face it Cardiff are stuffed financially. Folks took the p~~~ out of us when we were in administration. Cardiff got the the play-off finals... with a decent squad. These two would be decent signings as qwould the boy Gabor... again as cover for Mc & Smith and with Delaney out.

It's a long hard season and we need a squad and decent cover. Yes we need a striker and to off load players - but these other guys as rumoured.... don't automatically say no.

Is it that Keane will sign anyone who is prepared to come to Ipswich, another Irishman this one he has even played alongside,to add to the Irishman recently signed from Sunderland.Do we have a scouting system anymore and is Manager proactive in looking elsewhere.Doesnt seem to be improving squad much with these signings but then is he too bothered,I begin to wonder!

If we buy him now and then sell him in January - we could us Dublin our money.

I thank you.

Still can't understand why Keane got rid of Harding & Richards a year ago...this is hardly progress is it?

I don't agree with the majority of fans saying it would be a bad signing. Experience at full-back is what will get us promoted, not the attacking attributes of O'Connor who is defensively beaten too often. A solid player would be welcome there.

However I do feel we can do better. For example Sheffield Wednesday are in big trouble at the moment, why not help them out a bit with a bid for Tommy Spurr. Only 22 and a better defender in my oppinion than O'Connor. And while we're at it, how about Beevers too (England U-21 defender) an/or even Tudgay (always has performed well at this level).

Oh wait...Keane hasn't played with them before, they're not Irish, and not Sunderland. Blast.

Burnley paid £100k for Graham Alexander, and that worked out very well for them. That said, it is unusual to pay any sort of fee for a player of that age...

I think an experienced left back would be an asset to the squad. If this is true, lets hope MK is the man for the job...

Lighteningboy - Richards and Harding have hardly set the world alight since leaving and both struggled to find a club. Best you leave it to the gaffer

To be remotely interested in a player my criteria is:- must have Sunderland, or at least Cardiff connections, must be Irish, must have either played for, or with, me previously ...... Who am I ? - unfortunately no prizes for guessing correctly (not even a season ticket).

Who needs scouts anyway when I have the above.
