Hull: Town are Paying £320,000 for Bullard
Hull: Town are Paying £320,000 for Bullard
Wednesday, 2nd Feb 2011 10:24

Hull City's head of football operations Adam Pearson has reiterated his claim that Town are paying around £20,000 of loanee Jimmy Bullard’s £45,000 weekly wage. Bullard, who scored on his debut for the Blues in last night's 2-1 victory at Derby, is at Portman Road for the remainder of the season.

Pearson says Town are paying £321,480 towards the 32-year-old’s salary: "We're getting nearly £20,000 a week and it's a £320,000 contribution.

“People may sniff at that but in the Championship that's an awful lot of money and more than pays for the three or four players we've brought in."

Sources at Town continue to insist that they are paying a weekly share nearer the £10,000 mark originally reported, although no official confirmation is likely with the Blues rarely if ever making comment on individual players’ earnings.

If Town are paying £20,000-a-week towards Bullard's salary, it would almost certainly mean that the Blues' share of his wages is higher than anyone is currently being paid at Portman Road.

Pearson, who revealed the figures in the programme for Hull's 2-2 draw with Leeds last night, says Bullard’s contract, signed during the Tigers’ time in the Premier League when he moved from Fulham for £5 million, makes up around a fifth of his planned budget for next season: "Jimmy is an undoubted talented player who has two-and-a-half years left at this club.

“His contract alone is 21 per cent of our total playing wage budget for next season so we hope he comes back in the summer match fit and that he's ready to go."

Good value for a genuine premiership player! Not sure why Hull need to make it public though

He didn't need to say that. Very unprofessional. Finances and transfer stuff are things that should never be made public in football. Town don't, so I don't see why Hull should.

However, that would pretty much serve to confirm that Town won't be getting Jimmy on a permanent deal unless they are prepared to part with a very large sum of money, i.e. £3.5m + £25k wages (minimum).

absolutly scapegoating him for poor managerial and financial decisions.. its not his fault that he was offered silly money and took it..

hopefully people will take note on how Evans et al are running this club and ensuring we dont get into a similar situation

All Hull have achieved is finally proving just how incompetent they where when they where in the Prem.

How dumb!

"If Town are paying Bullard £20,000-a-week, it would almost certainly make him the highest paid player at the club."

Just to be very pedantic - as I understand it, Town are not paying him anything. He's being paid c£45k per week by Hull under his existing contract. We are paying Hull a subsidy or loan fee, whatever you want to call it. He is definitely the highest-paid player at Portman Road, by virtue of the fact he is being paid c£45k per week by Hull!

time will tell, still think its a pity that some of that 300k was not spread over 3 years on young Austin

So Hull's wage budget for next season is over £214k p/w and Jimmy is getting £45,000 of it for the next 2 years after he goes back? They could be screwed if noone takes him off their hands.

I suspect they will let him go for nothing but the question is if we (or anyone else) will pay the sort of money he would be looking for (even if it isn't £45k i'm sure it will be a lot).

It's easy to criticise Hull after the event but at the time he was a good signing. He has single handedly kept Fulham up the year before and if he had've done the same for Hull it would have been a bargain when you consider what Premiership football is worth. Length of contract is a bit crazy though.

wasn't this deal done by a certain Mr Phil Brown - the same one who now manages Sean St Ledger at Preston?

seems someone has difficulty accurately assessing the value of players to a club

We are also probably only paying him until the last day of the season, whereas Hull will have to pay him for the off season (and beyond).

That may account for the disparity in the figures

Either way, Hull were the ones who massively over paid him in the original contract and neither Town or Bullard should be drawn into a public slanging match

When you consider that Civelli and Quinn between them have probably taken this club for well over £500,000 this year and wont kick a ball, this is already looking like a steal. Its minimum risk just paying the guy 20k p/w (unless he gets a nasty injury).

If he scores goals like the one last night & we keep winning games the home league attendances will pick back up & he will have paid a good part of his wages himself!

Who cares - he does the job!!
We have all moaned that we cant get players because of teh wages so surely this is a good thing that we are paying more for him?!?!

Just to put some people right, Jimmy Bullard was bought by a very different Hull City AFC. Different owners, different board, different manager. We won't be screwed even if Jimmy stays with us for the rest of his career, we have £48m coming into the club over 4 years and we now have something we haven't had for decades.....very wealthy owners.

Adam Pearson, our Chairman, is as honest as the day is long and operates with consumate discretion, that is why we do so much business with Manchester United. The reason he has come out and said what he has said is that you manager chose to economical with the truth when asked how much Bullard was costing.

Good luck for the rest of the season, here's hoping you send Bullard back to us with his mind and body back in working order.

If that is true and it has now been made public knowledge then it will be interesting to see what wages our out of contract players are asking for in response to this being made known(and I believe Hull in this, as it is Town that has the most to lose by that figure being made public).

So Austin starts for Burnley last night and scores none with his team losing, Bullard comes in scores a cracker and helps the team to a win, good business i say then!

Pearson no one to blame but himself!

Pedantic point noted and story amended!

AmberAndBlack

No one at Town has commented officially on Bullard's wages at any point. The Hull Daily Mail reported that the figure was £10,000, leading to Pearson's initial comments re the figures.

Pearson's a plank.

And that sounds like great value to me if he stays fit and pushes us into the top half!

I very much doubt we are contributing more than £10k per week to Hull, but even if we are, if JB helps us stay in the championship it will be worth every penny!!

Very unprofessional of Hull to go public on such a thing.

Great 3 points last night boys.

Sounds like Pearson covering himself. If Jimmy continues in a similar vein to last night 20K a week would be a bargin.

It seems the £320,000 is the total fee. As a loan fee is usually payable on top of wages, it means the total of £320,000 is not bad business, and effectively less than the claimed £20,000 per week.

Bang on hamshireblue. Suspect we've paid a fee of about 160k to remove any call back rights and then paying 10k a week towards salary. So this is just pedantic bickering about the structure of the deal. Both technically would be right in that case.

On another point, wasn't it pearson who left hull to run Derby, got Derby in the poo then went back to hull?

Suspect his personal fortune isn't that of ME's and isn't self made, so I'd tend to think we've got a decent deal in reality with ME on the case

If Hull are now so wealthy, why would they go on about how much of a saving they're supposedly making...

corshamblue added 11:48 - Feb 2
320k will prove well spent if he contributes to securing our Championship Status, which I've no doubt he will along with others. Top finish last night, happy days.
