Jewell Tried to Land Premier Targets
Jewell Tried to Land Premier Targets
Tuesday, 1st Mar 2011 12:11

Boss Paul Jewell has revealed that he tried to sign two Premier League players on loan last week but that they decided to remain with their clubs to fight for their places.

Jewell told the club site: "We are always looking to improve the squad and we did try and get in a couple of players last week.

“They were at Premier League clubs but said they didn't want a loan move and wanted to stay and fight for their place, and I can understand that."

A week earlier 33-year-old Aston Villa right-back Habib Beye had turned down a loan switch to Portman Road.

Jewell has reiterated his intention to send his first and second-year professionals out on loan: "Lads like Reggie [Lambe] and Conor Hourihane. They are good players and doing well in the reserves. I have been impressed by the young pros but I would like to get them out on loan.

"[They need to] go and play some first team football and get kicked a bit. It will be good for them as footballers."

Young keeper Ian McLoughlin, who is one of the large number of players out of contract at the end of the season, joined Stockport on a month’s loan on Friday.

Jewell says central defender Tommy Smith recently had the opportunity of a spell away from Portman Road but opted to stay: “Tommy Smith had a chance to go out on loan three weeks ago. But the young defender wanted to stay and fight for for his place and I’m happy with that.”

New Zealand international Smith is yet to feature for the Blues under the new boss's management.

yes it is TractorRoyNo1 Roy didnt try going to other leagues like Jewell has and will continue to do...... players who do not want to be playing football and are happy to sit on the bench can stay where they are as far as i am concerned, the Summer transfer window will be the big test and i am confident BFJ will come up with the goods so long as ME comes up with the cash. Not sure it will be a prem player though more likely from a lower league....

TractorRoy, maybe Keane's not to blame for not being able to get (established) players, I remember Robson struggling at times hence the look at lower leagues or overseas, neither of which Keane appeared to do, other than Ireland!

What Keane can be blamed for is having a large squad of players too scared to perform and for that he had to go. Go back and read what Jon Walters' had to say. Jewell is a massive breath of fresh air by comparison.

> all Keane's fault then, not being able to get players to join us?

Players are human beings and their thoughts on working under Keane are probably similar to ours. If we did a poll about who we would prefer to work for, I think 99% of us would say Jewell to Keane. He communicates more with players, has a sense of humour, sticks with the starting line up and doesn't keep making changes when players make mistakes or because they don't appear to work hard enough in training (it's matches that matter!).

As for loan signings, unless they are with a view to a permanent deal I don't see much point in them at the moment as we are not going up or down this season. Let's save our cash to the summer.

How is it Clegg's fault if some Premier League journeyman wants to keep bringing home the bacon warming his butt on a bench?

No point in loanees now, unless they come with an option to sign in the window. No chance of playoffs and unlikely to get relegated. PJ has already got us playing good football. Just got to work hard at our finishing, & cut out defensive mistakes. Easy said I know, but some 2nd rate premier league reserve on loan is hardly going to improve us.

Who'd want a loan move for a few weeks to play out the season in mid-table in meaningless games?

PJ is the man!

DJ Kesgrave. Someone who is out of contract in the summer and not able to break back into the first team. Someone who is trying to get into the 'shop window'. Simples.

If you get these players in and they 'get-on' with the manager and squad you have a far better chance of signing them if they stay put.

Always worth improving things no matter how short term it is. I hate watching Ipswich lose.

Would like to know who these players were.

Keane left us with a squad short on class, Jewell is doing well with what he has which is pretty bare in terms of quality, we have no creative midfield and not 1 decent striker, it will take a fair bit of cash to turn this team into promotion hopefuls, and somehow I doubt we will be prepared to spend that much, all in all, mid table is what we are and where we will finish, certainly this year and maybe next as well, we are well short in vital areas.

According to Sky Sports News Robbie Blake turned down a loan move to a Championship club to fight for his place. So im guessing he could of been one of the players

Depressed got more chance of Jason Scotland losing a couple of pound than knowing who these players are! Why dont we have a punt on the lad Delfonso from villa on loan or Townsend is available again?

Sometimes it is easy to forget that players may have families that they cannot/will not uproot or that they may not wish to leave for a few weeks/months unless circumstances are such that it is their only alternative. Getting paid in the Premiership and being on the fringe of the first team or squad may well seem more attractive at this stage of the season than getting first team games down the leagues.
On the other side of the coin it may benefit some players to test out a club or two if they think they are going to be on the move in the summer.
Lots of people leave a job for what they perceive to be one that suits them only to find the grass isn't greener.
If we make no progress on signings before next season then that may be the time to worry. What is going to be interesting is the impact the recent Sky box case has on players wages. If Sky cannot pull in the dosh then all players will see the ramifications in their wages. We have to be sure we aren't going to get caught as we were when the last TV deal hit us badly. It may be an issue that if Premiership wages get scaled back clubs like ours may seem more attractive, though there may be a knock on effect down the leagues. That said, it will be a while before we learn how the Sky case goes if they appeal.

Why on earth are people still a) talking about Roy b) blaming him for not bringing players in? Remarkable - the blokes been gone almost two months!

The lack of loan signings IMO is a) Jewell's inability to convince players to sign b) the clubs reluctance to do the deals i.e. Clegg.

Personally, lets give PJ the benefit of the doubt. I suspect the board are reluctant to spend on a team who have little to play for. Plus we know from the last managers reign that players wanted to sign but the CEO failed to do the deals (for whatever reason)

blue tinted glasses most of you...
suddenly players not coming is down to family commitments etc..nothing to with the chatty scousers inability to get them here..wheras it was obviously all keanos fault (which it probably was by the way!) I am not some Keano lover..i'm just a jewell underwhelmer..(new word)
cant wait for this time next season when you're all calling for his head coz we're mid table again..
This could have been a keane statement.."tried to get players..couldnt!"

to be honest its waste of time anyway...we will be mid table..might as well wait till the summer and spend Wickhams fee on four quality players..hmmmm.. if we can get them here of course!
