Wickham Again Linked With Newcastle
Wickham Again Linked With Newcastle
Wednesday, 4th May 2011 13:34

Town striker Connor Wickham is again reported to be a summer target of Newcastle United. The Magpies were strongly linked with Wickham in January when the England U21 international was claimed to be a potential replacement for Andy Carroll after his departure for Liverpool.

Newcastle boss Alan Pardew, who was Reading manager for a brief period during Wickham’s time in the Royals’ academy almost a decade ago, is said to be ready to test Town’s resolve with an offer in the close season.

Tottenham and Liverpool are the clubs most often linked with the 18-year-old, but plenty of other Premier League sides have also been keeping an eye on the frontman’s progress since his time as an academy schoolboy at Playford Road.

Speaking in March, manager Paul Jewell reiterated that the Blues don’t want to sell Wickham, who is now contracted until 2014, but felt that if he did go it would almost certainly be to a bigger top flight club: “If it was one of the smaller Premier League teams I don’t think Connor would want to go, but if one of the top clubs came in, it’s hard for them to say no. But we’re not actively looking to sell him.”

Connor Wickham is a great player and it would be a real blow to see him go. I suppose if he had offers from big clubs it would be hard for him to turn them down, surely he signed a new contract to stay at the club rather than leave?

Anything above £5m (with add ons), take the money and run.

I would be worried if the speculation was about Carson. Now there IS a player to get excited about.

It will need to be a Massive offer,of over £10 million really.

Jewell has a massive job to turn us in to a side pushing for play off's and without Wickham Bullard McAuley and Norris, I can only see more of the same next year

Connor signed a contract till 2014, but we all know they are not worth the paper they are written on. However, having signed this much improved contract it protects the club against having to let him go on the cheap.

Anything around £10million and we will have done well. This money would enable PJ to get replacements for next season though we would be sorry to see the young man go.

Wickham is a young player with his head srcewed on and I don't think he wants to go any where this summer. He still has lots to prove at ITFC and until he has achieved success here in terms goal scoring why would he want to move just to warm the bench.

I would be surprised if Newcastle will offer more than £3-4M for Connor, which is absolutelly unacceptable. If he goes it will be to Spurs, Liverpool or else in that magnitude for at least £10M. I personally will agree on such deal as he is still not a fully developed player and the £10M will be enough for 2-3 quality players to come in instead. This will give us the spine for a much stronger team that is capable of pushing for promotion.

Connor is the most special talent to come out of our academy in many years in my opinion. Quick, strong, powerful, can finish, good in the air, Championship young player of the year despite being injured for a lot of the season and involved in England U21's despite having only just turned 18. All that and he's played out of position and not grumbled.

It's scary how good he is. I have no doubt at all he will score goals in the premier league for the next 10-15 years injury permitting. Although very different players, he's better than Darren Bent was at 18.

Hope we can keep him and find a goalscorer to partner him

I think we should sell him to Spurs for £10 mil, and then have him loaned back for the season

He's signed till 2014 but unfortunately it refers to the 24 hour clock and will be the time his taxi arrives the same day we get offered anywhere near the £10 million plus quoted.

I don't think he's that good. More over hyped.

If we don't sell soon, he's values going to drop and we'll end up letting him go for 2m or knowing our luck his contract will run out and he'll leave on a free.

Won't go anywhere this summer, his value will only increase during next season so why sell him even if we could get him back on loan for a season? If we keep him and manage to go up then all he needs is 1 goal in the premier league then we would be talking STUPID money these days

Guys Messi is a great player, Wickham is not yet, he is promising but so was Dean Bowditch and he's now at Yeovil.

There is no way Wickham is a GREAT player. Made me laugh that comment.

He is a young player still learning the game. But I am not sure just how far he can go. Bowditch was being spoken about in the same terms as Wickham is now and we know what happened there.

Any offer around the £8m-£10m mark is a must sell figure. Could be used for quite a few decent signings for PJ

Wickham will leave in the Summer with Norris and McAuley. Unlikely we will sign Bullard. Much for PJ to ponder.

If we could get anything like £10 million for Connor (which with our track record i very much doubt!) then take the money and run. It looks like our squad is going to be pretty depleted very soon, and with that kind of money we could probably get in 3 decent players.

take only 35mil or more. twice the player of Carroll.

Jas0999. Think you could well be right. This will be a real test for Mr Jewell, so if Wickham is going to be on his way, personally, i think we should accept anything over 10 million & invest it in the team. We could feasably get in 3 or 4 quality players for that kind of money, but, all the big clubs are after Connor, arn,t they??????????????????

I'm sorry, Dean Bowditch was never quoted at £10-15m. He was always too lightweight as well. Wickham is twice the player he was.

I'd put my life savings on him staying this summer. The fact is he isn't good enough for premier league football, not even to have on the bench. Why would any top flight club spend anything near what we want for him (most likely £10m+)? We talk about a 20 goal a season striker, this guy could be it, 7/8 (?) goals in, effectively, half a season as the first he was injured or on the bench quite often. Played on the left he has scored goals, and most fans agree he looks better up top. Obviously I would like one or two new strikers who are guaranteed to score a half decent tally atleast but I've got high hopes for Wickham next season.

I think this story is part of the Portman Road PR at work as it has all season, keeping up the price for an expected move in summer to fund the team. So far, its only Exeter and Bury that haven't been linked with him, but hey, there's still another week to go !

1) Exactly how is he twice the player of an England international who has scored goals regularly in the Premiership this season?
2) Exactly how is he a better player than Darren Bent was at 18? Besides the two of them being completely different types of strikers, it ought to be remembered that at 18, Bent was scoring 15-20 goals a season.

I'm not denying that Wickham is talented, but let's try to keep a sense of perspective here. Does he have the potential to be a very good player: Yes. Would he get a game at a top Premiership club: At this stage, no way.
