Town Linked With Pearce Move
Town Linked With Pearce Move
Thursday, 9th Jun 2011 08:50

Town are reportedly set to make a move for Bournemouth central defender Jason Pearce. The 23-year-old, who could cost around £700,000, is also understood to be interesting Burnley and Barnsley, while Peterborough were very close to a deal earlier in the week.

Hillingdon-born Pearce came through the youth system at Portsmouth but failed to make a senior appearance for Pompey.

During his time at Fratton Park the 6ft 1½in tall centre-half spent time on loan at Woking before joining Bournemouth on a free transfer in August 2007.

Since then Pearce has established himself as a key member of the Bournemouth side as they have progressed from League Two strugglers to League One play-off semi-finalists. In January 2010 he was named the Cherries’ first team captain.

Contracted until 2013, Peterborough appeared to be close to a £500,000 deal for Pearce last week until Bournemouth discovered that the previous Dean Court regime which had signed him from Portsmouth had agreed to a 50% sell-on clause which scuppered the switch.

Current Bournemouth chairman Eddie Mitchell turned down a bid for one of his players yesterday but it’s unclear whether Pearce was the target: “It is so far adrift [of the Cherries’ valuation], it is really not worth mentioning.”

Meanwhile, there seems to be little progress on the Connor Wickham front with the 18-year-old striker having flown to Denmark with the England squad for the UEFA European U21 Championship yesterday.

Wickham is understood to have been the subject of an £8 million offer from Liverpool at the end of last week but despite speculation in some quarters that a deal is done, that currently appears not to be the case.

The Blues are believed to have turned down the bid as it stands but there has been no official comment from either club regarding the proposed move.

Elsewhere, released Reading centre-half Ivar Ingimarsson continues to be linked with the Blues with his friend and ex-Blue Hermann Hreidarsson believing he would be a good signing for his old club: “He knows the league and has won the Championship with Reading. He won’t be shy — he’s a real leader of men. Ivar certainly ticks all the right boxes.”

Last night the Blues were reported to have made an offer for Preston central defender Sean St Ledger, while Sunderland's Nyron Nosworthy is also on Paul Jewell's list of potential signings.

I can't see anyone opposing to this kind of transfer. Young, hungry, potential, ticks ALL the boxes for an Ipswich Town signing in my opinion.

Is he left sided? Might be a good new partnership of St Ledger and Pearce. Can see a few deals being tied up all at the same time.

I know it's just rumours & speculation but there does appear to be a great deal of bids all around the £1m mark. I know we have money but Evans & Clegg like to keep a very close eye on the purse strings to ensure that we spend above our means (and rightly so). The funds will come from the sale of Wickham who will be gone by the end of the month upon his return from Denmark with the U21s. £8-£10m to bring in 6 quality players will make the entire squad stronger. Dont mbe frustrated with the lack of movement so far, theres only a handful of clubs so far that have done any business, with the season not long over most players are away on holiday so deals cant be done. 4 weeks from now we will have a great squad under an excellent manager, I haven't been so optimistic about a season for years. COYB!

This would be awesome, very impressed with him in the play offs, however, i cant help but feel that with Eddie Howe at Burnley everyone else would be also-rans in the race to sign him. I hope im wrong.

This signing would excite me a lot more than Chopra and many others we have been linked with. As others have said ticks all the right boxes.

Whilst he was a youngster at Pompey, he also had a brief spell on loan at Bognor Regis Town (when they were in the Conference South) in 2006/07. I was Bognor's kitman at the time and I could see then, that he had a good future ahead of him. He was about 17 at the time and even then was strong in the challenge, dedicated and always gave 100%. I'm not surprised at his success with Bournemouth. He was a top bloke as well. I'd be very pleased to see this transfer happen.

Good to be linked to this kind of player - young, hungry with bags of potential. If the links are true and we can add the likes of Treacy, Pearce and Cresswell to Connor, Hyam, O'Connor, Martin and Carson we might actually have a young, pacey, hungry team next season playing proper football with Chopra on the end of it all to bang in the goals. Happy days...possibly!

If true, excellent news. EXACTLY the type of player we need - IF he played along side an experienced centre half. St. Ledger or the chapfrom Reading would fit the bill. Sounds more promising.

Brilliant! I love all these names we're linked with! I hate that half of them are complete rubbish! I had would love to see Jason Pearce, and Sean St.Ledger in our back four anyday! I've got family in Bournemouth, and have seen them play, and been round Dean Court, Jason has always had a good game everytime i've seen him, COYB!
