Town Linked With Shotton Bid
Town Linked With Shotton Bid
Saturday, 13th Aug 2011 10:18

Town are reported to have made a £1 million offer to Stoke City for defender Ryan Shotton. The Blues were mentioned in connection with the 22-year-old yesterday with Burnley understood to have made a similar offer and with Derby also said to be interested.

The clubs are also reported to be willing to consider taking 6ft 3in tall Shotton on loan with his chances of first team football likely to be limited at the Britannia Stadium, although he has recently found a role as a makeshift striker.

Central defender or right-back Shotton came through the ranks at his local club and has previously spent time on loan at Altrincham, Tranmere and Barnsley.

So far his Stoke career consists of three starts and five sub appearances and was involved in both this season’s Europa Cup ties with Hajduk Split.

On Thursday, Blues boss Paul Jewell revealed that he has spoken to Potters boss Tony Pulis and, making reference to Matthew Upson and Jonathan Woodgate, said: “He has [got plenty of centre-halves] and the ones that we were in for he keeps nicking!

"We’re trying to get players in. I’ve spoken to Tony, I’ve spoken to every Premier League manager trying to get players. But it’s so difficult because Premier League teams want to carry big squads. Some of them are in Europe and they have two teams almost.

“It’s really difficult getting players out of Premier League teams and because the transfer window closes on August 31st if they can’t replace them. It’s really a bit of a chicken and egg situation.”

Jewell made an offer for a central defender on Monday but was aware that other clubs were also interested in the player he had targeted.

As of Thursday's pre-match press conference, he was still waiting to hear if the bid had been successful.

Loan with a view to permanent move would be good.
Pity Burnley are interested as often loans seem to be local.

Quite versitle. Never seen him or watch him but sure he would be a good signing, possibly a loan with a view to permanent.

It seems he was a regular in loan spells at Altringham in 2007/8, Tranmere in 2008/9 and Barnsley in 2009/10, so why not Ipswich 2010/11? The right sort of age and let's hope we're able to get him.

By the sound of it, PJ has spoken to Tony Pullis and sounded him out before we made the bid and so we do stand a chance.

Stoke have a ridiculous amount of defenders! I don't see why they wont want to go on loan, theres no way theyre all going to play!
6ft 3 and versatile, sounds good to me, although I know little about him!

Sounds good and Stoke clearly would let him go after signing Upson and Woodgate. Right age and can cover 2 positions so very positive.

If it is a loan, probably end up at Burnley. Closer to home.

I cant see him going out on loan after we've offered a million quid for him and pj and pulis have been on the phone to each other.Quietly very confident on this one.

Good player. Watched him play for stoke in uefa cup the other night which he scored in. Will have to leave for his career to progress with 4 excellent cb in front of him.

Be happy with him if we could get him in.

Can't be that good if he can't get in above injury prone rejects Woodgate and Upson

Sonian_blue.

I take it you do not drive much on the west side of England, Burnley is possibly only 25 miles closer than Ipswich to Stoke.

If its difficult getting Prem players why not go in the lower leagues, Cresswell seems a good buy and there are others, better that than players past their sell by date.

Pip50. I hope you are joking? "he can't be that good if he can't get in ahead of injury prone rejects upson and woodgate" Do you honestly believe we should be looking to sign players of a level that they are picked ahead of the likes of the two players mentioned? Why not put a bid in for terry and Ferdinand then? Get real!

Looks Like a good player but our defence is shocking Creswell=awsome Edwards=Ok (Out of position) Kennady=ok Delaney=good/S**t at times Smith= Going down hill. Ainsley=Need to get better. Wright=Not old enough yet. Ing=good (When bot injured) Andrews=Needs time to play & gel with team (Can play at CM CDM CB RB/LB if he has 2). So LB Is Sorted CB Need 1 or 2 more Very soon. RB need 1 more Asasp. So all in all it just defence left
