Jewell Planning Permanent and Loan Deals in January
Jewell Planning Permanent and Loan Deals in January
Saturday, 24th Dec 2011 09:05

Town boss Paul Jewell says he wants to make both permanent and loan signings during the January transfer window and revealed that he has already made a couple of enquiries regarding unnamed targets.

The Blues manager said: “We want to improve the squad. We want to bring in permanent signings if we possibly can and there might be one or two loan signings.

“Whether we can do that in the early part of January or the late part of January once again depends on lots of things — finances, clubs agreeing a fee, agents agreeing players’ terms.

“I’m not sat here thinking we’re OK, we want to improve the squad. We know that for the long-term if we want to move forward we’ve got to bring in more players.”

Like many managers, Jewell isn’t a particular fan of the window: “The January window, like the August window, drives you mad. All of a sudden people will ring out of the blue and a deal gets done which you didn’t see coming.

“When we make enquiries, and we have made a couple of enquiries, what happens is that the agent gets to find out and touts the player round, that’s the way it works.”

The Blues boss, who has ruled out a renewed move for Doncaster’s Billy Sharp but will be trying to secure Danny Collins and Keith Andrews either on further loans or permanent deals, feels he’s got a decent squad but believes additions are still required: “I think we’ve got good players. I think we need to strengthen in certain areas of the squad, every manager will say that.

“There might be some people who might leave, there will be people who come in, that’s football. It evolves, nothing’s ever permanent, it’s always on the move.

“I don’t really like to make predictions, we might not sell a player, we might not buy a player, but we’re certainly looking to bring in some players in the January window.”

Jewell has previously said that he’ll be looking for “young, hungry players” in January to augment the more experienced signings he made in the summer.

The Town manager and his squad are training on Christmas Day morning before travelling to the Midlands for the Boxing Day game at Leicester in the evening.

He admits the festive period can be quite hard for people in football: “It can be a tough time. I don’t see my family, the staff don’t see their families. I guess the only people who are happy are our wives!”

If PJ and CO Can get this right in January we really could be in a great postion come next season. Let's be totally honest. We are not going up and WE will not make the play-offs possible FACT. However next season there will no doubt be more pressure to challenge lets build the team starting in January and continue from then into the Summer.

jewell i wouldnt be worrying about the long term quite so much. You are going to need a few players in Jan to sort out the mess we currently are in. If not, you wont even be around for the long term. RB,CB,GK and CM (assuming Andrews goes for good) a minimum

Maybe a couple of signings needed RB and CB for now. Whats the point of doing what we have the last 3 seasons and sign loads of players let loads of players go? It dusrupts the squad, players need time to gel and fit in. I think that has been the biggest problem over the last few years. Wholesale changes don't work.

The league is poor this year in terms of quality . This would have been the year to get promoted based upon the season so far. Southampton are almaost a nailed on certainty. We will unfortunately be scrapping to survive at the bottom. Sad times at PR.

There will be more outs than ins,and a few more loans.
ME's intention is not to spend only wheel and deal.
That's another pointless season up the spout.

ME is bleeding every fan dry and has been for some time, we don't mind if we can see progress, but we're going backwards, we're doing our bit but he's not doing his.

'We're looking to strengthen the squad'...how many times have we heard that in the last three years then, we certainly do need to strengthen but to get better than we've got is going to cost us, every Club out there are looking for quality younger players from a lower level - even these lads through their agents are demanding big bucks now...if you're serious about bringing in the 'right' players then you'd better move quickly, but we don't do 'quickly' at PR these days it seems.

PJ 'wants' to bring in new players in Jan.

Well I 'want' a gold plated Rolls Royce for Christmas.

I know at least one of us will be disappointed.

That said, COYB!

A big strong goal keeper would be nice, that can come out and comand his area

We need two fullbacks
Push Crestwell forward into a wide midfield role a la Jamie Clapham
Push Edwards up and out of the door or keep as cover for Carson/Martin

They are both at fault for not stopping the opp wingers from getting in crosses
Is Edwards ever in the right position ?

A deep lying midfield player that can tackle, Jewell is not going to play Luke Hyam even if we only have 11 fit players, I don't know why !!!!! He must be sh*t in training.

a C/half is also needed one with a bit of pace and can organise the back four

Hold on, that's 5 players already and have not started on the forwards

Time for bed

Also Paul Jewell is a character. Why can't we all just like the man. We've been through enough managers in the last few years. It's getting upsetting. I've liked all of them. Magilton was a ledge. Keane could have been. Blah blah breakfast time. I was gonna write a much longer post....

Like most fans I would like us move early in January to get some new faces through the door. It seems like the scouting has really picked up and I hope we are able to sign some realistic targets, i.e. some players from League One or Two (or overseas) in their early 20s. Let's INVEST some money in fees on decent young players which could see us profit from those investments in future financially as well as on the pitch.

@s6blue. That's exactly the attitude that's killing the club. Long term can mean long term for the manager or long term for the club.

For Town to go anywhere a change in attitude is needed and we need to think 'long term for the club' and sign players who can progress us in the long term not just within the lifetime of an individual manager. Quick fix just doesn't work at Ipswich.

If any of you lot hope for good and quality signings come January YOU MUST BE DELUDED ! All we'll end up signing some useless freebie unwanted by everyone else and couple of loans....... and our club will be saying they're thinking about future !!! WTF !!!????

I believe if PJ is given time and a bit more money then he is the right man to get us up. I think he has cobbled together a decent squad for now, and I still believe that all is still possible - relegation - mid-table or even promotion via the play offs. COYB !!!
