U18s Crash Out of Youth Cup
U18s Crash Out of Youth Cup
Friday, 13th Jan 2012 21:09

Town’s U18s crashed out of the FA Youth Cup this evening, losing 3-1 to Burnley at Turf Moor. Russell Osman’s boys went ahead via a deflected Byron Lawrence effort but the Clarets equalised from the spot before half-time and added two after the break.

Two from Steven Hewitt (one pen) and a Joe Whight own goal saw Burnley’s youngsters to their 13th successive win and through to a fifth round tie away against Reading or West Brom.

Burnley: Cook, Williams, Conlan, Coleman, Anderson, Love, Mullin, Hewitt, McCartan (Daly 82), Gilchrist, Evans. Subs: Errington, Nuttall, Holt, Jakovlevs.

Town: O'Donnell, Jones, October, Thorsteinnssen, Maduako, Whight (Acott 71), Winter, Bennett, Marriott, Lawrence (Simmons 63), Timlin (Meikle 84). Subs: O'Neil, Leddy. Att: 620.

A decent game played in sub-zero temperatures. Burnley started very well with excellent left wing play, but Town got back into it after the blood obviously started warming in their legs.

A quite even first half with an obvious penalty given away, second half Burnley looked that little more stronger, Town defensive errors costing us the game. I must say it's not a disaster going out to a good Burnley youth side - they are very strong defensively and have skill on both wings, their number 3 in particular looking good.

Thorsteinnssen for me was the stand out Town player.
It was at least refreshing to see some effort.

Decent size crowd too.

Nice to see Lawrence get on the scoresheet, big future ahead of him if he works hard. He's the sort of reason that we need Category 1 academy status, we can continue to create the Connor Wickhams, Darren Bents and errrm Jordan Rhodes' of this world and make big money on them (minus the later).

I thought the most any club will get for a player now at A1 or whatever category is something like £300k?

Well we have Roy Keane to thank for kicking out the football genius that is Bryan Klug and if Simon Clegg knew anything at all about football he would have weeded out the dead wood from the Academy years ago. We must have Academy 1 status to have any hope of building a team to get us out of League One!

I echo brazil 1982 comments, the 1st team defence desease spread to the youths!
it was 3 defensive mistakes that cost us, although on balance burnley for me shaded it, on the plus side Gunnar Thorsteinnssen looked excllent i was impressed by Bennett too. For Burnley they were good in defence and there number 3 conlan and 8 hewitt look like good prospects

I too think Burnley were the better side. They had far more idea in the final third and started the brighter of the two teams. We were better towards the end of the first half and had we gone it at 1-0 maybe the result would have been different, our goal not exactly against the run of play at that stage, but the penalty - the last kick of the first half - put Burnley on level terms and they came out of the traps much quicker than we did second half.

Lawrence was the pick for me, he twisted and turned and used his strength, bringing people into the game with a flick here and a lay off there. He hit a rasping drive from the edge of the D that hit the bar - great effort.
Burnley defended well and we didn't look like we'd score in the second half.

Mentioning no names (but he wore a blue shirt with number 5 on the back) he had a shocker from start to finish. One to forget and when compared to the assured and efficient Burnley centre halfs, that was possibly the biggest difference between the two sides.

My honest opinion is yes, there are some good signs of possible prospects - and some of these lads are very young boys, but there doesn't appear to me to be any probable 1st XI players from tonight's showing at least. These guys aren't ready is my view - mind you some of our 1st team don't look like 1st teamers at the moment.

Shame they failed to progress, but part of the learning process me thinks and Burnley looked to have half a dozen very decent lads in that side. And, when I got up to leave, I realised just how cold it was...

Oh dear, ousted by Burnley, it doesn't look good but who's to say Burnley don't have a decent crop?

Sign of the times when the once famous ITFC Academy side is ousted by Burnley. Getting rid of B. Klug was a disastrous decision that should never have been allowed to happen. Oh dear! What a mess from top to bottom! Where is our saviour coming from?

agree thorsenssen and bennett impressive but i thought bennett was a right back why are they playing him mid field we needed someone strong in defence but once again proof PJs diamond does not work on any level

Newboy bennett is a rb and a good one great pace a waste to play him midfield lawrence looks over rated not surprised they took him off whight looking average the academy has gone backwards without Klug Hall Humes and Kiwombya if Russell Osman spent as much time encouraging his team as he did abusing and arguing with the officials in the first half they might have fared better even the crowd were shouting shut up and sit down at him .

Poor management throughout ITFC and clueless leadership and i use the word leadership loosely a shambles from top to bottom

blue1 totally agree about Bennett, but Whight picked up a knee injury after 5 mins and was struggling the rest of the game.

Osman seems to do this at just about every game i go to.

Unfortunately looks like Jewell may have stumbled onto a system of play today.

was at the game last night . what a dismal performance i saw, with the manager only concentrating on arguing with the officials and not concentrating on
the game. how can you bring young talent through and lead by example .

Ipswich used to be successful in this youth cup. Is the time of many promising youngsters over?
