Davies Confirms Derby Exit
Davies Confirms Derby Exit
Thursday, 28th Jun 2012 19:52

Town target Steve Davies has confirmed that he will be leaving Derby County this summer to join an as yet undecided club in the south. The Rams recently denied claims that the Blues had made a £500,000 offer for the 24-year-old but TWTD understands the striker is on Paul Jewell’s summer wish-list, the Town manager having been the man who brought him to Pride Park during his time as Derby boss.

Earlier this month, Rams boss Nigel Clough revealed that Davies had been made available for transfer for "a genuine family reason" having turned down new terms shortly after Derby had activated an option on his current contract extending his deal to the summer of 2013.

Davies, who the Rams reportedly value at £1 million, tweeted confirmation of his exit earlier this evening: “Sorry guys and girls. Unfortunately I am leaving and I know people are sceptical but it is honestly for family reasons.

“Me and my family have loved it here and I have loved playing for [Derby] but it's time to move on - you have been great fans, thank you.

“My family are actually from London, so I think it will be down south, but not 100% just yet. Thanks for the support.”

Jewell brought Davies - who perhaps notably was following a Town-related website on Twitter for a while earlier this evening - from Tranmere to Derby in June 2008 for a fee which could have risen as high as £725,000 had various clauses been triggered.

Injuries - including a fractured skull last October - have limited Davies to only 55 starts and 39 sub appearances in his four years with Derby, in which time he has scored 23 goals, 12 of them during 2011/12.

When Davies was first mentioned in connection with the Blues last month Bristol City were also said to be interested, along with Leeds, whose location would appear to rule them out of the running.

Next week may well be an interesting time for us. Strong possibility of Davies, Scotland, Chambers and Cheik Kourama (spelling?) all signing contracts on 5 July now. I'd be well happy to have all 4 of those players in our squad for next season.
Would still be interested in Baldock (permanently), Murphy, Keogh and a couple of keepers to round things off of course, but wouldn't be a bad start to the rebuilding process.

I think we need to start signing players NOW. Even PJ said he wanted business done before pre-season - as yet not very much movement for us. Other clubs have signed players though.

Davies injury record is a concern, but he is a good player - when he plays. Presumably if a London club comes in for him, he'll go there??

It will be Charlton or Palace, I would imagine.

Davies is at the right age as well, but I won't hold my breath on getting him. If Davies is another target we don't land what on earth is PJ and CLEGG doing?

'I think we need to start signing players NOW.'

And yet you accuse the club of panic buying. Brilliant.

how long will it take people to realise that football club contracts run until the end of June / Start of July, then all the Bosmans kick in, then the players for fees move unless they hold out for a lastminute.com deal at the end of the window, with the exception of a few here and there, thats the majority of it..... if you dont like it, start a petition to the FA to change the rules / bosmans / transfer windows etc. Its just how it is, mid July we'll start to have the squad taking shape......

Easier run to get from Derby to London down the M1 than cross country from Ippy to London. Only 45mins in it, so doesnt sound too much of a closer location IMHO to warrant a move to us. Wont hold my breath on this one.

Will he accept payment in second class stamps and an unused if slightly furry throat lozenge Clegg found down the back of the sofa?

in reality, even if he lived an hour south of Derby (im midlands based) its still over an hour to get to London on a train or with any amount of traffic..... or he could live in Colchester or near Witham, that sort of way, easily get to ITFC, and a 30 min train ride to London....... he has signed for PJ before too......

Garv added 00:53 - Jun 29
Rosseden please let me know what train gets you from Colchester to London in 30 minutes, it might come in handy! More like an hour.

rosseden added 01:38 - Jun 29
Witham to city was 40mins when i used to get it. Witham is an ok commute to itfc id think. I now live between Nottingham and Derby and work in London. By car it is good two and half hours. At best two hours on train. Don't think its unfeasible for him based on what he said. Could well end up elsewhere still tho . . .

Only 1 signing...blah, blah, blah Come on Jewel blah, blah, blah...
here's some more statistics concerning the FLC, We've made 2 signings so far (I'm assuming here that Cheick Kourouma will sign as TWTD reported), as of Thursday only 5 teams in the Championship have signed more players than us, Barnsley, Leciester & Wolves with 3 each and Leeds (Warnock has to have 10 strikers!) and Sheff Wed with 4. Only 3 other teams have made as many signings as us, Brighton, Huddersfield & Peterborough. Of the remaining teams 9 have made NO signings so far and 6 have made 1 signing.
19 Teams have signed the same amount or less players than us, thats around 78% of the league.
