Town Linked With Move for Leeds Keeper Lonergan
Town Linked With Move for Leeds Keeper Lonergan

Blues boss Paul Jewell is hoping to beat Bolton to the signature of Leeds United keeper Andy Lonergan, according to a national newspaper. The Town manager is ready to offer the Whites their £200,000 asking price for the 28-year-old, who was previously a Blues target in 2008 during Jim Magilton’s time as boss when at hometown club Preston.

Leeds are willing to allow the 6ft 3in tall keeper to leave now that they have completed the signing of Paddy Kenny from QPR.

Lonergan is well known to Bolton manager Owen Coyle, who has confirmed his interest: "There are a number of goalkeepers that have been in the frame, and Andy is one that has been mentioned.

"He's a goalkeeper I've known about for many years and he played against my Burnley team for Preston in a season that he was probably the outstanding keeper in the whole Championship.

"There was a lot of interest from Everton at the time, I'm led to believe, so I know all about him, but there are three or four others out there at the moment, so we'll see what the next couple of weeks bring."

Leeds boss Neil Warnock has confirmed that his club has turned down a bid for Lonergan, who has two years left on his contract at Elland Road: "We have an offer from a Championship club for Andy Lonergan, but it wasn't what we would call acceptable."

Coyle wants Lonergan to compete with Hungarian Adam Bogdan for a first team place, while a more regular spot is likely at Portman Road.

Capped by the Republic of Ireland, who he qualifies for through his grandparents, at U16 level and England at U20, Lonergan also had loan spells at Darlington, Blackpool, Wycombe Wanderers and Swindon while with Preston, joining Leeds for an initial fee of £200,000 a year ago.

All I want is a good vocal keeper who can keep the deffence calm (no fulop, me no speak all game) but also a keeper with quick distribution for counter attacking football!

Cant see him being more than a back up for us. I would be very surprised if it ends up with ALB plus one other keeper for the season

Preston Fans' Player of the Year 2008-9 (the year Richard Wright won the same at Ipswich) and 2009-10. Something tells me if we keep on signing players with these awards we will get somewhere!

Signing a permanent goalkeeper would be a big relief and I'd say Lonergan fits the bill, as does Heaton. I am sure Malcolm Webster will give good advice about which one to go for.

The northwest may be his preference I reckon.... very good keeper in my view and would do well at Bolton should he go...

Decent keeper. Would be happy for him to be our number 1. Don't know how reliable the link is though! Probably nothing in it.

Another day, another rumour, another keeper. We must be up to PJ's 25th choice keeper by now. At least we can't be outbid by Leeds United on this one!

Wouldn't be my first choice, but with the diminishing options available out there I'd take him. Would prefer Scott Loach or Alex Smithies still personally, but with the Heaton deal falling through Loach seems unlikely and Smithies transfer request at Hudds has gone very quiet... I'd be happy with anyone this season if they were assured they were our longterm number one tbh! its been so long since we had one!

I agree with Steve, we are going to be linked with every keeper looking for a new contract in & around the Championship whether we're interested or not. Any agent worth his salt will be looking to use our missing out on the Polish lad, who's name I can never spell properly, to the advantage of his client.
As for Lonergan; I think he'd be ok without really being the keeper I'd expect to see taking us into the promotion picture. I just have a feeling we'd be looking for a better number 1 this time next year.

Key 2 this story is the media know we need a GK Leeds sign P.Kenny n therefore we are linked with Andy: I would say 90% of all linked stories on TWTD have been rumours n no concrete evidence I now ignore every article with the word linked in the title n go back 2 sleep

Rather not give the dirty Leeds more money to spend taking more of our linked purchases away from us.

In a slightly unrelated topic. Does anyone know if there is truth in the rumour that we are trying to sign Luke freeman. He looks quality.

all these goalkeepers, if we only sign half those'' linked'' we'll not concede a goal, there will be no room for the ball .

would be more than happy to get a 28 year-old with experience of the division.
However, i would prefer Loach, Heaton or the Swedish Keeper.

Might be sounding a bit negative but every time i've seen him play he's been awful! ALB is probably as good!
