The book Burned on the DUP's catastrophic Renewable Heat Initiative looks good 14:35 - Nov 13 with 604 viewsSteve_M

The sort of incompetence, assuming it wasn't deliberate fraud, that might have made a government think twice about bunging it more money.

"A whistleblower notified Foster’s department about abuses in 2013 and again in 2014 — to no avail. The scheme continued and was extended. Officials and politicians seemed oblivious or complicit. The projected cost overrun ran to hundreds of millions of pounds and Stormont shrugged. It assumed the UK Treasury was footing the bill"

No doubt there were many instances of abuse of this scheme, but what many people seem to be unaware of, or have forgotten, is that the majority of legitimate installations are quite rightly recompensed in repayments for not just the fuel used, but also for the capital cost of the installation - which would be something like £50-60K for an average size biomass boiler, as opposed to £4-6K for an ordinary boiler. In my case payback will be about 20 years - exactly the length of time HMG guarantees repayments for.

Poll: Why can't/don't we protest like the French do? 🤔

There were key differences in the operation of the scheme in Northern Ireland - no cap on costs and a lack of political will to intervene once evidence of fraud became apparent -to that in the rest of the UK. There is no suggestion that there was widespread fraud in the rest of the UK.

Ah right, wasn't aware of that, thanks for the explan. I had to go through incredibly stringent personal checks, & remember one phone convo with Ofgem in which I said it was ridiculous that they were asking whether the installation was enclosed by 4 walls & a roof. He said "you'd be surprised at what some farmers have tried on"! When installation was finished, it had to be commissioned in the physical presence of an Ofgem Inspector.
