Article worth reading on 10:28 - Mar 6 by GaryCooper | Governments and religion rules by fear, four thousand people die every day from TB FFS. |
Those TB deaths are avoidable, mostly being down to poverty and governmental neglect. There are treatments and vaccines (I received the latter at school). With enough effort, the disease could be eradicated, like smallpox. None of those things are yet true for Covid-19.

Article worth reading on 09:52 - Mar 6 by homer_123 | 'It's obviously a serious issue.' Is it? It has the potential to be serious but the effects it is having far, far outweigh it's current threat. Markets going nuts, people panic buying etc. |
I didn't know whether to laugh or cry at this bit: "Stockpiling products such as disinfectant, face masks and instant noodles is a common approach". Instant noodles? Really, I mean really? Some of it is quite brilliant, in a sadistic kinda way: "After a rumour emerged that Wuhan was a central hub for toilet paper production, people started panic-buying, creating a genuine shortage, culminating in armed robbers seizing 600 toilet rolls in Hong Kong."

Article worth reading on 10:32 - Mar 6 by GaryCooper | The 3.4% is rubbish, there are countless people who have had the virus, had very mild symptoms and not reported it. |
Latest research does not suggest that is the case. The Chinese authorities tested very widely in Wuhan. Edit: Tho I agree the 3.4% figure is misleading. [Post edited 6 Mar 2020 12:05]

Article worth reading on 11:31 - Mar 6 by Guthrum | The suggestion I heard yesterday was that the milder, but more (successfully*) infectious, strains of C-19 may actually help. Patients are likely to survive, plus it may then confer immunity from the more lethal strain. Possibly accounts for the decline in the infection rate in Wuhan. Animal to human transmission is thought to be how it first originated (possibly from bats). Plus dogs are able to catch colds from humans, always have been able to. * By rapidly confining or killing the host, a virus essentially commits suicide, as it cannot then be passed on. |
Yes, I'd caught that as well. So, this is what was reported: Singapore’s Ministry of Health has said there’s a “theoretical possibility” of the coronavirus getting transmitted from animals to humans — as concerns have grown over whether pets can catch the Covid-19 disease. The ministry’s Medical Services director Kenneth Mak said today that if the infection transmits in droplets, there’s a “theoretical possibility of the virus spreading from individual to animal” and vice-versa through a contaminated surface, Singapore-based Channel News Asia website reported. At the same time, he voiced caution over considering pets as “a serious vector of transmission”. There are no immediate plans “to isolate, do contact tracing for pets, or exercise any form of quarantine measures” on them, he added. This comes as Hong Kong confirmed that a pet dog - whose owner had contracted the virus - had also tested "weak positive" for the virus. The original mutation/ strain went from animals to humans but this is now working in reverse (at least suggested in this report) - which does make things more interesting as this does change the landscape in terms of two things: 1. Transmission of the original strain/ virus is likely to increase and current methods of stemming it are somewhat curtailed in this scenario 2. The liklihood of a further variant coming along increases (again, there is nothing to suggest it would be any worse a strain if that were the case, just increases the liklihood) [Post edited 6 Mar 2020 12:18]

And if this thing does take hold and then run alongside the common cold and flu. Each year the X amount of people off work unwell will increase by hundreds of thousands and it's really not good for the economy in general. People keep focussing on so-called hysteria without contemplating why governments around the globe are taking this seriously.

There's a difference between taking it seriously and panicking. Markets have gone crazy and people are panic buying.....that's an over reaction to the current situation. That's not to say that in the long term it could be serious but we are not there yet - precautions are sensible - panic and hysteria are not.
