I thought Lonsdale was a fantastic villain let down by a terrible plot - probably the worst example of the Roger Moore era of Carry On Bond.
Some of his one-liners in the film, with his deadpan delivery, are absolutely superb:
"Look after Mr Bond. See that some harm comes to him."
"James Bond. You appear with the tedious inevitability of an unloved season."
"At least I shall have the pleasure of putting you out of my misery."
In full agreement on Dalton though - the very best of the Bonds with his gritty portrayal, which very much follows Fleming's literary Bond. |  |

Originally the next Bond film after The Spy Who Loved Me was going to be For Your Eyes Only but Broccoli decided to postpone FYEO and do an adaptation of Moonraker first due to the success of the first Star Wars film. Also the main reason you had that ridiculous fight scene with the astronauts shooting laser guns while floating in space.
Another problem with Moonraker was the decision to bring back Jaws ( clearly just used as a comic character) who was even more clumsy and stupid than he was in TSWLM. |  | | |
