For anyone seeking alternatives to amazon for book-buying, I did an extensive search looking at a large number of places including biggies like Waterstones, Blackwells, Foyles etc; but also abe-books, Hive, Ken Spelman, wordery.com, Alibris, Petersfield Bookshop, thebookdepository (might be OK), betterworldbooks, bookprice.co.uk, AwesomebooksUK, theworks.co.uk. I looked at the one-star bad reviews first! plus speed of delivery and sticking to reasonable prices. Speedyhen looked the best of the online ones - BUT - I eventually went with (drumroll ....)

“The most magical little bookshop, … — a little piece of heaven in what can be a crazy world.”
"Okay, campers, rise and shine, and don't forget your booties 'cause it's cooooooold out there today". The shop doors are closed and it feels like GROUNDHOG DAY again, but we can still get books to you. Just get in touch with your requests. 27 Silver Street, Stockton on Tees, TS18 1SX Opening

I phoned them a couple of weeks ago - 01642-909970, a good old landline, wow! & an actual human being, Richard, answered straightaway. Asked if they had a copy of 'Infidel' (far from a bestseller) in stock - they didn't, but he was able to get onto their wholesalers (Gardners in Eastbourne) there & then, and arrange for them to send it directly to me. The book arrived in good nick 48 hrs later.

Poll: Town's most cultured left foot ever?
