Social media idea 11:23 - Jul 23 with 2809 views | GavTWTD | I don't use facebook so I don't know about that, but is a solution to all the madness on twitter to expand the blue tick thing for everyone? I don't know what the process is to get a blue tick, but if you could then change your profile so that only blue ticks can comment on your posts or @include you. I'm not saying it should be enforced that everyone HAS to get a blue tick, but public figures could have that option that only verified people could engage with you. Hmm, I'll stick it in the football category as it's about the recent racist tweets at the England players.

Social media idea on 12:48 - Jul 23 by GavTWTD | I feel you'd still be anon to the outside world but twitter would know who you are. If you committed a racial or homophobic crime then there'd be a fast route to give those details to the police. Yes it would be difficult to manage but at the moment its too difficult to bring people to justice. It's also optional too in my suggestion, so if you don't want to, don't. But if a public figure only wants verified people to engage, then they can. Perhaps it just wouldn't work because to become verified you're matching ID with a named person, not being anon. |
As Steve says there are regimes across the world that wouldn’t think twice about abusing access to people’s personal data. Twitter has rolled out some new features which offer some level of control as to who can engage with you but like with most things they do it’s a bit clunky and doesn’t totally stop people responding to them if they wanted to. Even if they ramped this up a bit it still doesn’t address the root problem.

You're missing the point. If you're worried about regimes getting your data then don't get verified. If you want to use the platform to speak to your heroes then do. If you're part of an underground plot to throw the government, don't! This still allows people to talk racist crap to each other but not to public figures. Social media becomes a nicer place and you won't get to see the scum unless you're friends with them, then that's your problem. To be honest I'm surprised nobody has come up with a new social media platform that does all this from the outset. I think it would get some major celeb sponsors.

Social media idea on 12:19 - Jul 23 by LankHenners | Having social media accounts linked to ID would be a terrible thing to happen. It’s pretty much unworkable from the outset, in terms of actual infrastructure required and that different countries will have different laws on these kinds of things so how will it be governed? Also, if, for example, you were gay in a country where homosexuality is illegal, you’d be putting your life at risk by signing up to social media or having to sacrifice the freedom of expression you get with an anonymous account. Further to that, plenty of people seem content to post awful stuff under their real names on Facebook, and when you have politicians, for example, stoking the flames of racism then what does it matter that we know DarthMaul69 is some middle aged bloke from London? The issue of ‘how best to use Twitter’ is a nonsense as well - it pushes the blame onto the person on the receiving end of the abuse. Does Marcus Rashford not use Twitter in the best way? Of course not. He gets racist abuse because other people are racist idiots. |
Well exactly. Honestly, I despair of some people. It’s also remarkably selfish to say well it works for me when I use it this way so everyone else should just be like me. The platforms need to be apportioned responsibility for managing the content on their platforms. When the online harms bill eventually comes to pass, it’s imperative that the regulator has sufficient teeth to really hurt the main players and their executives. That is the only way the current state of affairs will change. It’s been proven so many times now that self regulation will not cut it.

Wasn't aware I'd downvoted that, certainly didn't do so intentionally - apols. As I said in my follow-up, your point re gay rights etc. in other countries is a good one. Everybody, incl 'blue ticks' have always had the option to make their account a protected one though, which would mean only accounts they approve being able to see their tweets. On top of that, I think there's now also an optional additional filter of being able to restrict who can reply.
