Yes, such a shame that an outstanding Town player left the club under such acrimonious circumstances, although realistically at 32 years old, his time in the top league was reaching a close.

I have a vague feeling there was a Billy Baxter song sung at games but I can't quite remember how it went.

A great player who was a member of our great Team who were champions of England in 1962 He was captain at my first Town game nearly 58 years ago!!! Unfortunatly he didn't see eye to eye with new manager Bobby Robson who was just a couple of years older and the dressing room fight with Robson including Tommy Carroll sealed both fates and they never played for Town again He was small for a center half but could leap like a salmon!

Small for a defender but tough as they come.
Was my favourite player when I was a boy. I even named my budgie after him!

Only Wyn Davies had the beating of him in the air.

I saw him play as a young kid taken by my grandfather complete with stool to stand on and one of those rotating flag shaped rattles.
Wasn’t the song
‘Billy Baxter
Billy Billy Baxter’
To the tune of
‘alouette
gentille alouette’
?

Yes, that was it. The reference to stools and rattles brings back fond memories, but I had neither myself, the former because I was quite tall for my age.

I seem to remember the fee when Baxter ‘left under a cloud’ was £12,500
