Legal Beagles - can you explain this to me? on 17:10 - Mar 24 by NthQldITFC | I hear you, and even from a layman environmentalist's point of view I can appreciate that the principle you speak of underlies and is crucial to the entire justice system. But many of us would say that there is pretty compelling evidence that we are on the brink of (at the very least) social upheaval driven by the worldwide effects of climate change in things like food and water shortages over the next few decades. Whether (or rather how quickly) that social upheaval causes a breakdown in law and order and makes the justice system irrelevant can only be modified by radical change to our economic model and a total refocusing on getting onto a non-expansionist survival footing, rather than protecting the status quo. It's the big issue; it's the only thing that matters, even if many of us don't want to think about it, and if we have to break or at least threaten some of our comfortable institutions to start addressing that issue, the that's what we have to do - at any cost. |
And I hear you too, and fully sympathise. But apart from any issue of principle, it is not clear to me that 120 lawyers signing such a declaration will make any difference because there will be other lawyers to take their place. And if I were a protester, I think I would prefer the martyrdom (if that is the right word) of being punished for breaking the law. Sadly, the issue is both grave and very difficult to solve, without governments and people taking it much more seriously. [Post edited 24 Mar 2023 18:23]
