In 1998 I was in Belize, and this hurricane came through. My family were evacuated to Miami. The hurricane went through Honduras, Nicaragua and other Central American countries and devastated the area, killing a little short of 10,000 lives. My understanding is that it was barely covered in the media at the time. Hurricane Katrina, about 3 years later swept through New Orleans to wall to wall footage, but caused abou a fifth of the deaths. The coverage of first world New Orleans is not wrong. But the lack of coverage of third world Central American people is shameful. I’m not sure if anybody created a relief fund for them. But if they did I suspect it didn’t get the support it should, and the lack of media coverage would have been a significant factor | ![](/images/avatars/0.gif) |
