November 13th 1979 - the day George Best played for Ipswich on 08:26 - Nov 13 with 1509 views | ford6600 | Remember it well, used to live at very end of Norwich Road was waiting for bus opposite Maypole pub for ages It didn't turn up so walked to PR just about got in before kick off. A great attendance for a testimonial mainly boosted by George Best playing. A chance to see a legend not only play but play in the blue and white of Ipswich! Surreal to watch him l remember. He also actually played well. [Post edited 13 Nov 2024 18:02]

Best would have retained his skill so a testimonial game would have been a good opportunity for him to display his talent as his lack of fitness would have been far less of an issue.

I was there too and there were rumours at the time that we were considering taking him on. Bit unlikely. I think he was on Fulham's books at the time and moved to Hibs?

By then, Best was 33 & was playing for Hibernian on a "play & pay" basis. His presence did boost attendances, but Best was still drinking regularly & only played 17 games that season. I doubt Robson would have seriously considered taking him on.
