Although it's very different now to those pictures, it was even more so prior to some of the flood prevention work they did at Riverside Road. The bankside (especially between the rail bridge and the Riverside Road entrance) was a far more natural environment, with numerous bushes between pegs. They were all cut them all down and the bank straightened, sometime in the late 70's at a guess. It used to be be really popular before then, and I would often leave home on my cycle before the crack of dawn to get there at first light and try and get a good peg. |
Yes, it was very austere back then, so Nature is only trying to slowly reclaim what was taken from her. I imagine it would have been a lovely stretch of river if it was anything like the section above Boss Hall. |  |
