After the thread on today's North Sea collision, I've just gone looking up what happened when the ferry European Gateway collided with another ship off Felixstowe.
That second link is genuinely fascinating. Not just that someone tracks all that stuff (as a hobby?) but also the numerous work and renaming a ship goes through in its lifetime.

I'm more familiar with tankers, which can get renamed frequently but rarely have modifications on that sort of scale. A bit of an exception for LNG ships turned into floating storage units but that's just adding additional equipment to regassify the liquid.

Amazing to think it's 43 years ago. I well remember seeing it on its side off the coast of Felixstowe.
I have a photo of it taken from a ferry when we were on booze cruise to Belgium. A bunch of windswept goths in the foreground with the "wreck" behind them. It was something like 5 quid for ferry tickets and a free bottle of whisky included in the price.

My dad has mentioned those trips to Belgium on a few occasions.
