Forget Burnley, China is where you need to look for an affordable house 15:36 - Apr 30 with 305 views | WeWereZombies | https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cpq7y8vl55yo '...the collapse of the housing market. Many Chinese families invested their life savings in their homes, only to watch prices plummet in the last five years. Housing developers continued to build even as the property market crumbled. It's thought that China's entire population would not fill all the empty apartments across the country. The former deputy head of China's statistics bureau, He Keng, admitted two years ago that the most "extreme estimate" is that there are now enough vacant homes for 3 billion people.' What intrigues me is families with life savings and no mention of council house building in a communist state.

No mention of China having any triple lock on state pensions anywhere in the article either. Cheap housing, pensioners about to suffer, get on your bikes and get over there millenials - sounds right up your street.

One of my guilty pleasures is watching Race Across the World and China looked amazing in the new series. I've only seen the border area next to Pakistan and it was as rural and primitive as you'd imagine. Shanghai looks amazing (although too busy for me).

It's probably good if everyone has affordable housing. If your pension depends on people being homeless then you might want to re-think your values.

AI makes these things easier these days: Moving to China from the UK to work can be complex, but it's not impossible. You will need a work visa (Z visa) and a valid work permit, and your employer in China will need to sponsor you. You'll also need to register with the local Public Security Bureau within 24 hours of arrival and may need a residence permit if staying longer than six months. Here's a more detailed breakdown: 1. Visa Requirements: Z Visa: You need a Z visa (work visa) to legally work in China. Tourist and business visas do not allow work. Work Permit: In addition to the Z visa, you'll need a work permit issued by your employer in China. Application: You'll typically apply for the Z visa through the Chinese embassy or visa application center in the UK. Residence Permit: If you plan to stay longer than six months, you will need a residence permit. 2. Finding Employment: Employer Sponsorship: Your employer in China will be responsible for sponsoring your work visa and work permit. Job Search: You'll need to actively search for jobs in China, possibly through online job boards or by connecting with recruitment agencies. 3. Additional Considerations: Language: While English is often used in some workplaces, especially in larger cities and international companies, knowing some Mandarin Chinese can be very helpful and may even be required by some employers. Culture: Chinese workplace culture may differ from what you're used to in the UK, so be prepared for potential differences in work-life balance and communication styles. Cost of Living: The cost of living in China can vary significantly depending on the city and your lifestyle, but it can be significantly lower than in the UK in some areas. 4. Legal and Practical Steps: Visa Application: You'll need to gather the necessary documents and complete the visa application process through the Chinese embassy or visa application center. Work Permit: Your employer will handle the work permit application process. Registration: Upon arrival, you must register with the local Public Security Bureau within 24 hours. Residence Permit (if applicable): If you're staying longer than six months, you'll need to apply for a residence permit.

Lots of people have paid deposits for property yet to be built and are losing it. Very likely a big crash coming with all the civil discontent that will bring and the inevitable backlash from the government.

Plenty of risk of contagion in the West too, at one point looked like triggering another financial crisis. All that affordable housing comes at human rights cost though, much like the ‘feted’ standard of living in Dubai. That’s also if you don’t mind the risk of being snatched of the street because your neighbour doesn’t like you, and said you criticised the CCP. It’s not communism and it’s not capitalism- sometimes referred to as state-capitalism since the government holds partial (sometimes while) ownership of many firms, and has direct influence. Which is really an invisible barrier to entry in the West, it’s an underserved market since the government can intervene in operations, and not a particularly apprealing legal system. So whilst imports from China to the west continue to grow, western investment in the Chinese market has declined.
