Funny ol' expressions? 16:25 - Jul 31 with 416 views | NthQldITFC | "You lie like a hairy grape" ... is something my old Dad used to say, but I can't find any reference on the Internet. Is that something anyone else has ever heard, locally or elsewhere? Any similar queries? (better than plane watching, which has become a bit passé since afternoon tea)

Yes, I wondered that too. "You lie like a gooseberry" yields no search results for me either.

Funny ol' expressions? on 16:39 - Jul 31 with 346 views | Bigalhunter | There’s something in this… I’ve always considered a gooseberry to be a hairy grape. Robert Pollard, lead singer of indie rock band Guided by Voices released a solo album (under the name Teenage Guitar) about a decade ago, called……More Lies From the Gooseberry Bush. Your pops was right, you can’t trust ‘em I tells ya..

Brilliant, thanks - I'm sure Dad said 'grape', but that must be where it came from. He wasn't in the Navy, but he was nautically inclined!* Also, DuckDuckGo's spiders found "lie like a hairy grape" very quickly so TWTD is now the origin of that expression! edit: * when I say he was nautically inclined... he used to lie down on the beach a lot. Funny ol' expressions? on 20:36 - Jul 31 with 130 views | StNeotsBlue | Growing up I always thought Fuzzy's Dust was a normal expression during a game of cards when someone else laid a good hand. Rather than my Grandad not liking Germans much and just exclaiming was ist das in a strong East End accent. [Post edited 31 Jul 20:58]
