Phil's Story about the Foodbank Collection 10:54 - Aug 16 with 233 viewsCheltenham_Blue

Just prompted a weird memory.

Does anyone remember the old 'blanket collections' to gather cash donations for certain things in the days before football was invented by Sky?

For those that don't 4 people would walk around the ground in front of all the stands at half time and supporters could throw coins into the blanket for charity.

I can remember attending a non league game in the early 80's where such a thing was done, and about 5 minutes into the 2nd half the ref, (who was painfully unaware of the half time collection), found a 50p piece which lead to a tannoy announcement saying that if fans continued to throw coins onto the pitch the game would be abandoned.

Poll: Is it more annoying when builders

That used to be tha way collections were done for benefit recipients. It certainly helped John Elsworthy get his shop.
