... over the first half of the season we got promoted from League 1. Trying to find an identity, looking for a couple of players to link it all together for us, plenty of possession but far too slow in hitting the opposition when on the attack, not enough energy, constantly checking back when in promising positions. Back then pretty average, even poor, sides were able to contain us & we were caught out over playing it & then hit on the break to lose games that we had utterly dominated. Ultimately, we got key players in & McKenna changed us into a more direct, forward focused side (not direct in a Wimbledon or Graham Taylor way), that moved the ball quickly in sharp patterns, and the rest is history. Hopefully we will return after this break with a team that are better drilled in a faster, one touch, pass & move game to progress through packed defences. | |
