We have players hugging the touchline no matter who plays. Davis, Philogene, Clarke, McAteer, Walle-Egeli. In theory, against compact low block defences they should find themselves in space with some green grass to run into. More often than not, however, they don't. Why is this? Well, we take so damn long to get it to them that full backs are set and wide midfield players are back in position, thus doubling up on our wide players. Only on the occasions when we have moved it with pace and tempo through the pitch out to our wide players have we looked effective, especially down the left. This walking football, back and forward, sideways just plays into the hands of opposition sides. The Sky commentators last night got us pegged. We play far too much infront of teams and we are currently not breaking the lines often enough. | |
