I see a number of peeps on here have been going on about motivation and how some of our players are lacking in it due to the constant changes in our team. The counter argument appears to be that it worked twice before, so it shouldn’t be an issue. I tend to think that motivation is less of an issue at a lower level, that the mindset of, say, a League 1 or League 2 player is different to a high-end player – and that’s why they end up playing where they do. I was lucky enough to be in one of those posh lounges at PR prior to a game last season and I spoke at length to two former Town players, both of whom were very considerate with their time as I was probably boring the pants off them. Anyway, I mentioned how they would feel if, say, another player had been bought to contest their position when they thought they were the No 1 in that role. I also asked how they would react with constant changing of personnel in positions. Their response was unequivocal, that it affects the players and, more importantly, if affects the team even more. I thought about this for a while as I ate my third portion of (free) pie. Even though I’m part of the ‘it worked before, so it’s not an issue now’ group, I’ve slowly realised that THIS is the issue now. That we have a group of players – some of whom have tasted Prem Lg or higher level football on the continent – who won’t put up with this constant in and out process. It may well have worked when we had hungry players from the lower leagues who were eager to make that step up. I’m now not sure it works with a group containing players who have all held relative concrete positions at other teams at this level or above. Recruitment obviously plays a part in this. How on earth we’ve ended up with such an unbalanced squad after the latest window beggars belief. I hope we can turn things round quickly and that we show more signs of being a collective rather than a group of a talented players who turn it on now and again. Personally, I feel we’re on a slippery slip towards the inevitable – and if this league featured more than just one stand-out team we’d really be turning up the vitriol. Onwards and upwards. | |
