| Epiretinal membrane: anyone have it? 14:45 - Dec 12 with 706 views | DJR | I went to the optician on Wednesday and mentioned that I had noticed recently that the vision in my right eye (when corrected) wasn't as sharp as it has always been. In my eye test, I couldn't read the bottom line as the letters kept going in and out of focus. And an eye examination and scan revealed something which the optician said was due to macular oedema (fluid on the macular, which has nothing to do with macular degeneration). They indicated that this meant they needed to contact the emergency part of the eye department at the local hospital. Having done so, it emerged that I have something called epiretinal membrane which isn't quite so serious and so requires a more standard hospital referral. My vision acuity in that eye (when corrected by glasses) has now gone from 6/6 (or 20/20) to 6/15 which means I can only see at 6 metres what a person with 20/20 vision can see at 15 metres. Were it in both eyes, I think I would now struggle to read a number plate at the required distance. It appears that the sight doesn't get better short of eye surgery, but it affects central vision more than peripheral vision, and the other eye can compensate for it. I was wondering if anyone else has had this, and what was the upshot or prognosis? Did, for example, your sight get worse? I might conclude by saying that Wes Streeting will not be happy with me as I will be one more addition to the hospital waiting lists. But in my defence, I have got to 66 without ever having medication that lasted more than a few days, so I haven't overburdened the NHS. [Post edited 18 Dec 9:52]

I didn't see it first time because my vision acuity is 20/200. I have now moved my laptop to withing 2m of where I'm sitting.

Understandably, it's not like we can check with just a cursory glance, is it! I dread to think what state my kids' eyes will be in when they hit their 60's with 30 more years of abuse than our generation. Anyway, good luck with yours. Let us know how it goes as I'm sure there'll be plenty more of us in your situation down the line.
| Epiretinal membrane: anyone have it? on 21:47 - Dec 18 with 209 views | djbeng | I’ve a epiretinal membrane in one eye following detachment surgery. Sight is fine in terms of 20/20 with correction, however things such as straight lines appear wavy and sometimes struggle to see letters or numbers within words. Over time that has become a lot less noticeable and as my vision was generally good the consultant cautioned against surgery and been stable for 6 years or so now. Hope it’s all ok for you. | | | |

Many thanks for this. Mine follows on from a retinal tear which I had about three years and for which I had corrective laser surgery. The retinal tear produced a lot of spider's web-like patterns in my right eye, which the surgery corrected to a large degree. I still had far more floaters and the like than before the tear, but my eyes have adjusted to largely ignore them. If things stay the same as they are when it comes to the epiretinal membrane, I could live with that especially as my left eye will compensate. In any event, the surgery for it sounds pretty gruesome. [Post edited 19 Dec 9:44]

The surgery itself isn’t so bad, or at least I didn’t think so. The post operation recovery is tough though. I did struggle initially but part of that was the initial obsession with the changes in vision but over time it does become the norm and I only see wavy lines if looking for them or watching us play stoke city in their awful shirts. Hopefully your situation is stable and you don’t require surgery but more than happy to re assure you, or not, should that be required.
