Defending from the front in the last 30 minutes last night 06:18 - Jan 21 with 524 viewsDubtractor

Was really noticeable last night, after we'd got the second and made some changes, that we took a very aggressive 'defend from the front' approach.

You'll often see teams retreat into a low block and sit in a compact shape, but we really got after them and didn't allow them to get settled on the ball at all, with the result that they couldn't put any pressure on our goal at all. McAteer, Hirst, Szmodicz and Taylor in particular put in a serious amount of running when they came on.

Resulted in one of the least nervous endings of a game you'll ever see - not sure Armstrong had a kick (of the ball anyway) after he came on.

I was born underwater, I dried out in the sun. I started humping volcanoes baby, when I was too young.

I thought our control was so much better than in the second half on Saturday, we kept the intensity up and gave Bristol City vey little - one chance early in each half really. Much better than the odd bits of carelessness against Blackburn.

It's taken a bit of time for us to settle, but we're utilising the squad as effectively as we did in each of the promotion seasons again and that should give us a big advantage over the rest of the league.

It's nicely set up for the second half of the season, still looks to me like three teams pushing for automatic promotion as no one else is consistent enough.
