Vets bills 06:08 - Jan 28 with 853 viewsgtsb1966

It's good to see that vets practices may have to publish their prices but to me there is one thing that really pees me off when I take my dogs and that is the cost of the medication especially when you see how much you can get it for online. Problem being there though is you need a prescription and our local vet charges £35 a time. Something that really stands out in this article though is that 60% of practices are not owned by vets and that's where I think the real problem lies.

Piss take isn't it? We had the same issue, some expensive medication we could get way cheaper but they'll only give us this branded stuff which has a beef taste in it. And when we asked for a prescription they'd do one for a charge but we'd have to come in every month to get it.

Such an obvious money grab.

Its a rip off, this is going back 10 years now so may have changed but our old vet did this so we moved to pets at home vets in BSE and they only charged £6 a prescription which covered for 3 months so we could then buy online, its worth shopping around.
Luckily our Vet here in Spain writes us human medication as the prescription which is exactly the same and it costs us €3 per month instead of €38!

Exactly what they won't do here. My dog is on Fluoxetine, a generic medication but they won't give us a prescription for that. Have to get the very expensive beef flavoured variety.

Which just gets crushed up into food all the same.

Mars ( the chocolate makers) sells more dog food than chocolate bars.

Not just the products either, they own loads of vets practices. As you say their pet segment is larger than any other, including confectionary. Well it certainly was until they bought Kellanova, not sure if that's changed things at all.

As for the OP I agree, absolutely immoral what they charge. I think its partly a consequence of pet insurance, if they think the owner isn't going to foot the bill they sort of name their price. When I was younger and more naive my then girlfriend and I had a cat and didn't insure it. It was really ill one night, I took it to a 24 hour vets and luckily I did as they said it wouldn't have made it through the night otherwise. Left it there on a drip overnight, the receptionist said we're looking at £800 and asked my insurance details. I said I didn't have any but whatever, I'll pay it from my own money. I got a call the next day saying the cat was all fine, come and collect her. Got there and she said 'I spoke with the vet, we'll do it for £200 as there's no insurance'. Might've been kindness, or just the fact they were very happy to charge a fortune to the insurance company. Probably a bit of both.

Very interesting story about your cat.
We don't have dog insurance (we have five dogs) an absolute rip off.
The first question a vet asks is '' is the animal insured''
Our dogs are insured if they were to bite anyone or cause an accident. Total cost £25 per year, for myself and my wife. In effect they insure the owner not the animals.
We pay ourselves the equivalent of what we would pay the insurance companies (monthly direct debt) so the money is there if we need it.
