Players chewing 15:12 - Mar 7 with 384 viewsandyblue231

I cannot believe the number of players chewing stuff while they play. Just saw Leif doing it. Just seems so dangerous - get hit in the back and you Could choke. And It must affect the amount of air you’re taking in.

Given the lengths clubs go to to increase performance by a percent or two, it seems a weird one to allow.

It seems to be that it is part of the sports science that they do so in most sports. At the top level any choke hazard will be negated by the very proximate medical support they get. The lower the level, the less likely that proximity will be and youngsters all copy their heroes. I don't like to see it but I guess there is evidence that it improves concentration and therefore performance.

I've always wondered about this. That distinctive blue gum. We used to get told by the ref on a Sunday morning that gum was banned.

I think that would make sense from a health and safety view at that level. Nowadays, you probably have to have trained first aiders on hand who would probably deal effectively with any choking but it is probably still banned. There is the additional issue of players probably spitting it out all over community facilities.
