It struck me that the negotiating experience of Trump and his senior diplomatic envoys (Witkoff, Kushner) has all been in the realm of high-status commercial property. An environment where reputation, finance and pragmatic self-interest are king, with sharp business practices like gazumping and failing to pay for stuff not uncommon. There are winners and there are losers. It's a forum where getting very rich is the key objective.

International diplomacy, on the other hand, is governed by nuance, compromise, dancing around strong emotions (e.g. pride in, or love of country), understanding of and some respect for the other party's position and motivations. There may be no winners at all and demands a high ability to fudge and kick issues down the road. The usual target is achieving the least worst outcome, if any final conclusion is reached at all. A very different discipline, in other words.
