I don't blame Taylor 09:46 - Mar 11 with 896 viewseastwell_blue

Playing out from the back - or pratting about at the back as it often becomes - seems to make everyone nervous, players and fans alike. If we're going to carry on with it at least stop passing centrally to the guy who has two attackers on him out of his eyeline. I'm not convinced the positives - the odd sensational move - outweigh the negatives. Just when we've built up a bit of forward momentum you can almost watch it disappear as we keep giving the ball away in dangerous areas. As well as making us jittery you can detect the boost in confidence it gives to the opposition.

I don't blame Taylor, just doing his job, it is the way we play. But doing it has been a bit Russian roulette recently, we were always going to get ourselves in trouble occasionally. Maybe he just does not have the awareness around him that Morsy always seemed to have. And playing in the left channel and being right footed, when facing the goal he is more likely to turn left to keep the ball on his right foot. And therefore more likely into trouble.

It was a mistake, it happens.

All 3 goals were poor though, the 1st might well have been a tug on Azon but to get up and shout at the assistant referee rather as their player breaks forward was just petulant. The 2nd was an individual error, the 3rd was a cluster. Davis doesn't clear, Kipre inexplicably gets dragged way out of position which he never recovered from, Furlong missing the ball, then a really stupid act in the box. Might well have been soft but you just can't give the referee a decision to make there. It was so horrible to watch.

I think O'Shea and Kipre take some blame for that second goal too, rushing a free kick right at the end of the half and the ball into Taylor was a hospital pass. Poor game management as much as Taylor losing the ball.

Players seemed programmed into always playing out from the back when in certain situations going long would be the much safer option. Not just us either; Liverpool’s recent league defeat at Wolves was due to the fullback passing back to Allison who then coughs up a weak clearance which Wolves score from. Obviously playing out for us is what we do and it’s worked magnificently for us many many times. But equally, just before halftime and 1-0 down… let’s keep it tight, get in and regroup.

With that incident, you actually saw the mistake before he made it - didn’t look up before playing the pass. That said overall we’ve been good defensively this season, I’d say playing out from the back is not one of our most pressing (sorry!) issues.

I didn't see it. The TV was still showing a replay as it happened!
