Where has this narrative come from, because it doesn't really stand up to scrutiny. It was true in League 1 but we spent very little on promotion to the Championship and had a tiny budget compared to the parachute clubs that season and not a particularly big budget compared to the rest either.


I don't think it's fair, as I said, but if you look at amounts spent, we paid more than anyone else in the Championship this season: https://www.transfermarkt.com/

We also spent the 7th most in the Premier League last season:

People not close to the club don't see the net basis. They only see expensive incoming transfer after expensive incoming transfer.

We spent a lot in the Prem as all newly promoted sides do, especially ones who haven't been in the Prem for some years. We also spent a bit this season as a parachute side, the first time we've had those finances behind us. But that's a period of just under 2 years where we've spent money, McKenna has been here for four and a half years. Our first promotion to the Prem had very little to do with spending so the narrative that we've bought success is, frankly, nonsense.
