Why the 10yd free kick distance not enforced? 16:22 - May 24 with 260 viewsOvertheborderblue

Why is the required free kick 10yd distance opposition from the ball no longer enforced for free kicks apart from attacking ones near the penalty box?

Because this is yet another law that referees have chosen to ignore, rather then slowing down even more what has become a stop-start game. Rather like defensive throw ins regularly being taken at least 10 yards further up the field than they should.

Not sure it does not slow the game down as it prevents the advantage to the fouled team of taking the free kick quickly .

Agreed. I'm all in favour of the quick free kick being allowed where possible. But refs now rarely seem to book players who try to stop a free kick being taken, as long as they are sly about it e.g. pick the ball up, rather than kick it away.

All our free kicks are taken quickly and passed backwards. Seems to be a KMcK policy.
But I think if an opponent deliberately prevents a free-kick being taken (as they do and so do we.) it should be an automatic yellow card.

It's supposed to be. But it's one of the many strictures that are rarely enforced so players continue to offend & if a player gets a second yellow for such an offence, the referee is lambasted by the pundits for not adopting a "common sense approach".
