O’Shea is obviously the better player, and our captain, but is he a better right-back?
His strengths there (e.g. being good in the air) are similar to Furlong’s, but he got caught out for pace early on against Sunderland, and looked slightly less comfortable receiving the ball.
If Diop and Greaves click, I can see Dara being a victim of his versatility at some point.

I think it’s a tough call to be fair and without being too ruthless , personally I don’t believe either would be or are strong enough in that position in the premier league
I’d take Dara at CB all day long in the Prem but not RB

Tend to agree. That’s really part of my point about Diop and Greaves.
Dara did well enough on Saturday, but better widemen are going to get joy there. It’ll be interesting to see what we do about Rashford.
I appreciate O’Shea has played there for Ireland, but that kind of pace just seems an accident waiting to happen.

Furlong is superb in the air - that’s why I think it’s an interesting debate, as we aren’t comparing O’Shea at RB to a typical fullback like Leif.

I must admit, I've never thought of Furlong as being anything special when it comes to his aerial ability. Certainly, I don't think he is as good as O'Shea.
And it could be argued, if last season is anything to go by, that he is not especially great at getting forward.

Alternatively, GON may be intending to bring in a starting right back, and he may just consider that either for the time being (a) Dara is the better RB, or (b) it's important to have Dara on the pitch at all costs, and he just doesn't rate Furlong that highly.
I guess we'll see. It seems strange not to have a square peg in a square hole in that position given how much we've spent elsewhere (and I'm not for one moment criticising our transfer dealings this window, which appear to have been both confident and canny, and with roughly the right bread to jam ratio!)

Yes, the captaincy definitely swings it in Dara’s favour. It’ll be interesting to see how it plays out though.
2 of Dara, Diop and Greaves playing is adequate for this level.
I’m not sure 3 of them in the back 4 / first 11 is though, at least not without a really high quality RWB in a proper 3-5-2.
