Who would manage it better? The position of the club at the time they took over would suggest Alf - he knows this division, but 60 years is a long time out of the game.

Alf would go 4-4-2, surely? Didn't he invent it?

What is key is that both will pick a formation and then work out the best player in each position. Cooks comment about "too many players" would ring true with these two - Alf couldn't pick subs and Bob had one to choose from. In their day they'd have a "utility player" who would cover many roles not a squad of 42 players....

I'd actually go with McGarry. Discipline needed, though Robson/Lea versus Chambers/Skuse in a fist fight in the dressing room after dropping them would lay down a marker. Don't know who would break it up like Geoff Hammond did? Toto?

Alf sort of invented 4-4-2.

Certainly playing with wingers playing much deeper than normal (especially Leadbetter) was unique in England in 1961/62 and contributed hugely to us winning the title.

That system evolved into 4-4-2 although the 1961/62 version was not what became accepted as being 4-4-2.

I don't suppose that there are any 'new' formations still to be invented but both of those great men would have worked out the best way of playing with what they had to select from.
