Probably a stupid question, but is there legal aid of any sort for people in her type of situation?

Putting aside that's all but disappeared here for many matters.

Fair enough. Didn't read the detail carefully enough but did see there was some confusion.

What is the situation where someone needs medical treatment and cannot pay? Do some providers refuse treatment? Is there like a charitable system that steps in if the patient can get there before it is too late?

I cannot understand how anyone can think anything other than a state- (i.e. tax)-funded system is the best way.

Not legal aid as such but plenty of “no win no fee” lawyers who’ll be happy to take your case for a very hefty percentage of any settlement

Most cities have clinics and/or hospitals that are designated for the uninsured. You can draw your own conclusions if they provide as good as care as you might find in hospitals catering for those with insurance.
