Some of our players appear to lack the basics 09:23 - Feb 6 with 955 viewsDJR

Having seen us play 16 times this season in person, I have yet to see a really convincing display as I wasn't at our high scoring games. The impression I get is that quite a few of our players lack the basics. In that sense, and given the quality of the opposition, yesterday's game was the worst game I have seen because the first touch, control of the ball and passing was woeful. There were numerous occasions yesterday in the second half when we had an opportunity to cross, but instead played it back or inside and the opportunity was lost. Now that must be because of the way McKenna want us to play, and I am not criticising him at all, but what he must think of the quality of some of our players when they try to play football I don't know. In terms of pure footballing ability, I think Aluko is head and shoulder above the rest, and I think Morsy is also good because he gets control of the ball and makes room from himself. But even Burns' crossing is poor on too many occasions. In that connection, it was interesting to note that the Gillingham players all tried to create space and look up before passing or crossing, something that I think our players rarely do. I have total faith in McKenna, but I do think there could be a quite a few players departing in the summer, whatever happens.

Agree with your sentiments, I had text my mate at FPR, whilst watching on ifollow exactly the same comments regarding Aluko, & getting crosses in to the box when the opportunity was there, only to end up scrambling back to Walton & couldn’t see why it wasn’t delivered. The 2 x strikers had little service & hence Nors was a chase & hassle game, the Pigs hold up play was good, but again no end product as little service in front of goal.
The rare ball in to the box was controlled by Chaplin & subsequently drilled in to the net, just didn’t happen enough.
As for the defense……..control, eye for a pass, time on the ball, basically had me worried every time the ball was in our final third that a chance would be forged, & fortunately they were unlucky no to score.

Not sure if it’s as simple, most have played at champ level at least so can clearly play, we are not set up well for me, with Morsy being out impacting. Three at the back look good but you need attacking wing backs and I’m not sure on Thompson. Carroll and Evans provide little centrally, while Chaplin isn’t a natural link with the midfield. Means if we don’t create wide, we don’t create, which when we have Thompson who looks more a left back than wing back it’s all down to Burns.

Edit we also seem not to trust each other in tight situations, will take the easy option to retain possession than pass to someone tight who might break the line.

The only Muff in Town.

This team can play… I’ve seen too many games this season (where the team have believed and played with a freedom) where individuals looked technically good

But I think the key work you use is ‘unconvincing’

That sums Town up in the last 4 games.

Perhaps teams are merely getting wise to where our threats are and working to block them off?

This isn't the same Gillingham we faced a month ago. They have their own new manager, reorganising and instilling some confidence.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

I think I would agree with that. In other words, we don't necessarily have the all the right players for the system, which means that some of the players don't look good trying to play the system. Fraser and Harper are an example of this because the inference from their comments on leaving is that each would have preferred to play in a midfield 3, which was not a system we were ever going to play. I also agree with you about Thompson, which makes me wonder why we let Coulson go given that he played for Peterborough yesterday. Finally, whilst a few of our players have played in the Championship, the only one I would say is currently of Championship quality is Walton.

Our larger squad is a blessing but also can be a hindrance I think. I'd like to see a more settled side to build some partnerships etc (gelling!!)

I think teams have caught on to the fact that if you can keep Burns quiet then you severely limit our attacking play, doubly worrying with him limping off yesterday.
