Not familiar with all the contractual situations, but as far as I see it (permanent players only)

*Walton
*Hladky
Holy (Sell / Loan)

*SIGNING (Permanent - left sided equivalent of Burns)
*Burns
*Edmundson
*Burgess
*Wolfenden
*Donacien
*Vincent-Young
Penney
Ndaba
Baggott (League Two Loan)

*Morsy
*SIGNING (Bakinson)
*Evans
El Mizouni
Ward (League Two Loan)
Humphreys (League Two Loan)

*SIGNING (Celina)
*Aluko (Further one year deal)
*Chaplin
Edwards
Harper (League Two Loan after pre-season)
Dobra (League Two Loan after pre-season)

*SIGNING
*SIGNING
*Jackson
Piggott (Sell / Loan)

This sees Carroll leave, Bonne and Thompson return to their clubs. Celina and Bakinson made permanent.

Those with * are the ones I'd expect to make the 18, with those not marked with one expected to compete for a place on the bench or cover for injuries.

It's not an overly bloated squad and requires only three permanent 'new' signings with Bakinson and Celina included.

That for me would have quality, cover and depth and, if the right pair of strikers were brought in, enough quality to go up.

I would push the boat out on a main striker (a million or two) for someone proven and then perhaps look to a Waghorn type that would be happy to contribute from the bench if they couldn't take the shirt or even a Premier League loan that would be willing to sit on the bench and make an impact.

Ndaba covers CB, Penney and Vincent-Young the regular WB's, El Mizouni midfield and Jackson up front.

The only possible question mark is another signing in central midfield of Morsy quality to leave Evans and Bakinson as the back ups. Strikes me that neither of the latter have been anywhere near Morsy's quality.

Assuming the teams stayed down and the investors said to McKenna he could have who he wanted I'd go for Brannigan (Oxford), Hardie (Plymouth) or Taylor (Oxford), Waghorn (Derby) as realistic targets, although think Brannigan will be this seasons Crooks and end up in the Championship.

I also think we will have funds to go after Championship players rather than Brannigan, Hardie or Taylor.

I think Baggott and Humphries might not be worth loaning out. At least not until January when the bulk of cup games are over. I say this as I think those players could stand to learn more by training with our senior team and getting the odd cameo rather than take on a new training ethos elsewhere. Tete Yengi is also one we might well see mentioned next season.

I have the feeling if Celina stays, Aluko goes, keeping Chaplin, Celina and Aluko seems to be quite a lot of financial real estate.

Burgess is also a question mark. I don't think he's all that much better than Toto Nsiala - who wasn't exactly irreplaceable himself.

Burgess is miles better than Nsiala. Sadly, a stupid challenge and switching off at Oxford will have people making all sorts of judgements (like he's not much better than Nsiala!) but that aside he's put in 5 or 6 displays already that are better than Toto managed in 3 seasons or so.

Burgess is a very decent backup as we have seen, but for me it would still be Edmundson, Wolf and JD.

I don't base my opinion on Burgess on his red exclusively - He was not very good at the start of the season either, we couldn't have signed Edmundson soon enough. Granted, Cook's football didn't help anyone. We have Baggott and Albie Armin waiting in the wings - I would sooner see those lads given a crack as understudies.

On what basis though?

If Baggott and Armin turn out to be better than anything we have then great.

But how many decent players has the academy (under Evans) produced. Last year people were saying they wanted Dobra to be heavily involved in the first team. He can't make an impact at a team at the bottom end of League Two.

Simpson is another case. Potential galore. But his output was lower than Sears and Drinan!

Ndaba looks like he could be close, but Humphreys, Ward, Armin and Baggott simply can't be relied upon ahead of a proven League One defender in Burgess that we paid £750k for. He's well ahead of them.

That's not to say the kids should not have the chance, but that will be given to them. If they regularly outshine other players in training they will be given a chance. If they can't do that, then they won't do it against similar players on a Saturday.
