Nothing new there. Disinformation and 'alternative facts' have been a part of political life as far back as inscriptions on the temples of ancient Egypt. The biggest issue with opposition is the inability to formulate a clear and coherent ideological alternative (in an era still ringing from the collapse of communism), plus the tactical inability to seize the reins of power (partly due to a tribalistic refusal to compromise and cooperate).
Simply offering to do the same job a bit better is not a strong enough incentive. Besides which, why should anyone believe them? They failed to deliver last time.
On top of that, society has been drenched in worship of wealth and mythologies of "trickle down". In the West, most people have seen their lives become more comfortable over the last 45 years. Don't want to upset that apple cart. The result is a tremendous inertia.

I guess the new thing is the speed at which all 'information' can be spread.
I would also suggest that QE represents the biggest ever trickle up of wealth which may finally tip the apple cart
"They break our legs and tell us to be grateful when they offer us crutches."
Given the UK’s uniquely awful democratic system, and the absence of any consistent standards in our politics or media, there can be few developed countries so ripe to be exploited.
Particularly in the 10 years after this film, we’ve proven ourselves to be a basket case that is much more likely to give our votes and our money to the rich and otherwise self-serving than it is to use those votes and money to build a better society and future.
