AI -vs- Climate Change 22:24 - May 16 with 876 views | NthQldITFC | It's interesting to me in a superficial way the contrast between the industry leaders who 'represent' the drivers of these two major 'threats'* to humanity. On the one hand, dyed-in-the-wool energy-intensive industries of all kinds have been trying for decades to downplay the threat of Climate Change in the face of increasingly overwhelming evidence of the catastrophic consequences we now face, in order to continue down the obvious dead-end of continuous economic growth to feed the capitalist juggernaut. Or at least that's the justification. On the other hand, AI bosses seem to be en masse begging governments to somehow (dream on) effectively legislate against their own creation before it really gets going. Are there any lessons that can be transferred from one sphere to the other? --- *Obviously I'm aware of potential benefits of AI and the not clearly defined threats at this stage, so I am NOT saying the two 'threats' are of the same nature.

The cynical here would say that the reason they are doing this is to hype their own creations, rather than any serious worry that ChatGPT is going to take over the world. What AI will potentially do is make a lot of people lose their jobs.

There are 100% real world problems, but the way the people who make AI talk about it is more akin to SkyNet than the real world issues.
