McKenna: “It’s going to take time but we want to be a big club in this divis 15:01 - Aug 27 with 812 viewsDarth_Koont

Very fair and overall positive post-match comments (rightly IMO).

But that line stuck out. Not because he doesn’t have ambitions for this season or believe we can’t compete with the best but he understands that there’s a step-up and a necessary adjustment that’s going to be part of the process.

I think that management of expectations is good to see. We can still be dark horses this year (as our results and performances prove) but the bigger picture of the Prem league is what we’re really trying to build towards. Of course we want to grab any opportunities that come our way, but a more sober and realistic timeframe on promotion is probably 2-3 years if we keep developing at the current rate.

The other positive thing about that comment is it suggests that McKenna has the patience and longer-term view of his and the team’s project. Might not protect us from a much bigger club coming in for him over the next year or two but suggests that he’s always seen it as a long-term project and he might be more reluctant to leave half-way through. And at the very least, if he does leave, then we’re building more sustainably and providing a new manager with a strong foundation, blueprint style and a clear direction forward. Bit like Swansea how managed to stay on the same path towards success with Martinez et al.

We never like to lose and max points or at least maintaining our unbeaten run would have been great. But his clear-eyed response to setbacks and where we need to be should give us much confidence.

The future is bright when you know what you’re doing.
