Yesterday has for me highlighted more than any game so far about playing styles and the squad of players we have.
Our playing style has evolved this season mostly through design, but also due in part to Walton's injury in the summer. Since Vaz has been keeper, our players have visibly grown in confidence at playing the ball back and forth with Vaz playing a sweeper role and often seen up by the centre circle. Similarly with George Hirst - an amazing center forward how can not only run but can have balls played up to him as a target and can hold the ball and lay it off.
But our squad is still full of players KM has inherited, and we just don't have two players for each position who play the same way.
Now I'm not having a pop at Christian (who I think is a fantastic keeper and probably commands the box better than Vaz) or any player in particular, but when the team have evolved to play with a sweeper and then for a cup game we put Walton in goal, it just doesn't work. He just doesn't play so comfortably with ball at feet, and doesn't advance up to the center circle. If Vaz had been playing, he would have just taken that ball that they scored their first from. Christian was left in no man's land, there was no deep defending, and it left him with the attacker running at him at pace, and a great finish.
Similarly with Hirst out and Jackson who plays a completely different game to Hirst, we have adapted to having those knock downs to Broady, Chappers, Harness, and we don't get that from Jacko. Kayden has some great attributes, but our playing style just doesn't work like that. It didn't work with Broady in the role either.
The squad has to develop by having players with similar attributes so that when someone is injured or rested as yesterday, the whole team can still play the same way.
I haven't really seen enough of Slicker to see if he plays like Vaz, and we are all conscious that KM is trying to bring in a couple of strikers who play like GH. I do think it means we need to let Christian continue his career elsewhere in the summer as he is a great keeper, but not the type we need now.

Aree on Walton fab keeper nightmare with the ball at his feet which is the modern game and how were set up now,
Vaz as you said would have cleared the ball over the top,
In the first half he would have spent most of it up near the half way line,
Slicker is a ball playing keeper like Vaz so with Walton here his development to being our senior goalie will be here if Walton's still here next season
It's football but sad for Walton one injury ruined his career here he was instrumental in our promotion, |  | | |

The team we put out was good enough to win that game. No need to over analyse things. They took their chances and we didn't. Fair play to them. |  |
